Description


Entry-level Systems Engineering position for UAB's Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) group.Assist with providing flight operations support of payload systems for space applications. Develop system-level documents and assist with functional and verification testing for complex engineering hardware and devices.


Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) was created to support the development of specialized research instruments for ground and microgravity-based research experiments. Since 1990, we have grown into a full-service organization, providing customers with a range of solutions from technical guidance to complete turn-key systems and services from concept through fabrication, deployment, and operational support. Our engineers are experienced in design, development, and commercialization of innovative hardware and software systems for the aeronautic and life sciences industry. As one of the nation's leading developers in cold stowage hardware for use in microgravity and exploration, our expertise covers mechanical, electrical, and software design, fabrication, assembly, test, and sustainment; as well as, systems engineering, safety and verification documentation / closeout, crew training, launch site support, mission operations, and recovery.

  • Assists in development, implementation, and analysis of technical products and systems.

  • Support meetings, teleconferences, and travel as required by projects.

  • Travel to support testing and launch/return activities

  • Reports to EITD Systems Engineering Section Lead

  • Performs simple and routine engineering design tasks with standard techniques.

  • Assists more senior engineers in the preparation of plans, data analysis, and reports.

  • May be required to work nights and weekends, as necessary, to support real time flight operations. Travel to support testing and launch/return activities for approx. 7-day periods, 5-10 trips per year possible.


Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in Engineering and one (1) year of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. STEM-related field is preferred.

  • Ability to use various engineering and documentation/analysis software, MS Word, and Excel

  • Ability to problem-solve

  • Ability to work independently

  • Technical Communication skills (verbal & written)

  • Process improvement and quality skills


Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Systems Engineering experience with space-flight or aerospace applications

  • Systems Engineering experience for development and production of embedded / integrated systems

  • Systems Engineering experience with ISO9001 and AS9100 Quality Programs

  • Operations support for NASA or commercial space activities

  • Experience using CAD software (e.g. SolidEdge or SolidWorks)
