Description
The Brevard Police Department is seeking a motivated and service-oriented Part-Time Safety Assistant to provide administrative, operational, and community support services. This position performs a variety of non-sworn duties that enhance public safety operations, support police personnel, assist crime victims, and strengthen community engagement efforts.
The Safety Assistant serves as a visible representative of the Police Department and may assist with special events, school crossing operations, records management, victim follow-up contacts, customer service functions, and various administrative duties. This position is ideal for individuals interested in public service, criminal justice, victim advocacy, or community engagement.
Actual duties and assignments may vary based on departmental needs and employee availability.
Schedule: This is a part-time, variable-hour position. Hours are not fixed and will vary depending on operational needs, seasonal demand, and specific assignments. This position does not guarantee a set number of hours per week or a consistent schedule.
Examples of Duties
The following duties are representative of the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
Community and Public Safety Support
  • Serve as a crossing guard at designated school crossings to promote pedestrian safety and traffic flow.
  • Assist with traffic control operations and road closures during special events and community activities.
  • Staff the Police Department event post during festivals, parades, and other public events.
  • Serve as a Downtown Ambassador by providing directions, assistance, and customer service to residents and visitors.
  • Observe and report public safety concerns to on-duty police personnel.
Criminal Investigations and Victim Services Support
  • Conduct follow-up contacts with crime victims as directed by Criminal Investigations Division personnel.
  • Provide victims with information regarding available resources, services, and case status updates when appropriate.
  • Assist with victim satisfaction surveys and community outreach efforts.
  • Support investigators with administrative tasks, case organization, and records management functions.
Administrative and Records Support
  • Assist with front desk operations, including greeting visitors and answering telephones.
  • Provide administrative support to police personnel and department divisions.
  • Assist with records management, data entry, filing, document preparation, and report organization.
  • Maintain departmental files and assist with document retention procedures.
  • Assist with preparing reports, correspondence, spreadsheets, and other administrative documents.
Special Events and Community Engagement
  • Assist with planning, coordinating, and participating in community events and public safety programs.
  • Support department initiatives such as National Night Out, Special Olympics events, community safety programs, youth outreach activities, and other special projects.
  • Represent the department in a professional and positive manner during public interactions.
Other Duties
  • Assist with various operational, administrative, and community-service functions as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as required to support the mission of the Brevard Police Department.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in public service, customer service, administrative support, records management, criminal justice, victim services, or related fields is preferred.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license or ability to obtain one within a reasonable timeframe.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and remain outdoors for extended periods during assigned duties.
  • Ability to perform light to moderate physical activity, including walking, lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, and directing traffic.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle when required.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and other outdoor environments.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in both office and outdoor settings. Duties may require frequent interaction with the public, exposure to varying weather conditions, and attendance at evening or weekend events. Employees must demonstrate professionalism, tact, sound judgment, and a commitment to exceptional customer service at all times.
