What is a weekend desktop support?

Weekend Desktop Support jobs involve providing technical assistance and troubleshooting for computer systems, software, and hardware during weekends. Professionals in these roles help end-users resolve IT issues, install or update software, and maintain network connectivity. They are typically responsible for responding to support tickets, managing system updates, and ensuring minimal downtime outside of standard weekday office hours, making them essential for businesses that operate or require support on weekends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend desktop support professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Desktop Support professional, you need solid troubleshooting skills, knowledge of operating systems (Windows and macOS), and experience with hardware and software support, typically backed by a relevant IT certification or associate degree. Familiarity with ticketing systems, remote desktop tools, and common diagnostic utilities is essential for resolving user issues efficiently. Excellent communication, patience, and time management are crucial soft skills for assisting users and handling multiple requests under time constraints. These skills ensure reliable IT support during off-peak hours, minimize downtime, and maintain business continuity.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend desktop support professionals, and how can they be addressed?

Weekend Desktop Support professionals often encounter unique challenges such as handling urgent technical issues with limited in-person resources and managing higher volumes of remote requests. Since fewer staff may be present on weekends, you'll need to be resourceful and adept at troubleshooting independently. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential, as you may need to escalate issues or coordinate with on-call teams. Building a solid understanding of company systems and maintaining thorough documentation can help you resolve problems efficiently and provide seamless support.

Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)

Passport Health

Ottawa, ON • On-site

CA$29 - CA$33/hr

Part-time

Re-posted 26 days ago

Job description

Registered Practical (RPN) - Travel Medicine

This isn't a traditional nursing role and that's exactly the point.

Passport Health is North America's largest travel medicine and immunization provider, with 300+ clinics across the Canada & the U.S. We're looking for experienced RPNs who are ready to step out of a high-pressure hospital or traditional clinic setting and into a role built around autonomy, specialized expertise, and genuine one-on-one patient connection.

What Makes This Role Different:

Most of our nurses work independently - no charge nurse, no team overhead, no endless task lists. You manage your day by seeing your clients, and providing them with the best experience possible. You will be supported by a network of clinical leadership, but the day-to-day is yours.

Travel medicine is a specialty. You'll develop deep expertise in vaccine-preventable diseases, international health risks, and pre-travel health planning - knowledge most nurses never get to build. Every client interaction is a true consultation, not a check-the-box encounter.

Current Opening Details
  • Location(s): Downtown Ottawa & Carlington

  • Employment Type: Part-Time (PT)

  • Compensation: $29.00 - $33.00/hour

  • Weekly Hours & Schedule: 8-16 hour/week including every other weekend

What You'll Do
  • Conduct in-depth travel health consultations and educate clients on destination-specific risks

  • Administer vaccines per standing orders and monitor for adverse reactions

  • Recommend and promote travel health products and medications as clinically appropriate

  • Manage clinic setup, inventory, and compliance with safety and documentation protocols

  • Support onsite corporate wellness or vaccine clinic events as needed

  • Complete ongoing travel medicine training - we invest in keeping your clinical knowledge current

Scheduling - The Honest Picture

Passport Health uses a census-based scheduling model, similar to what you may have seen in hospital or outpatient settings. We want you going in with realistic expectations. The nurses who thrive here are those who value the trade-off: less rigidity, more autonomy, and the ability to build a schedule that works for their life and for the business needs, even if that means some week-to-week variability.

Here's what that means in practice:

  • Hours are based on client demand, which varies slightly by location and season

  • We create a schedule that offers 3 - 6 months of consistency, helping provide stability, while recognizing that hours are not guaranteed in some markets

  • To support schedule planning and consistency, we require availability within set scheduling windows, which allows us to provide a clear, forward-looking view of your work schedule

  • We do our best to honor availability, and flexibility (preferred day/time coverage, weekends, or willingness to cover multiple locations) can increase your scheduled hours

  • Peak travel seasons (typically September - March) generally bring higher and more stable volume

What You Need to Succeed
  • Active RPN license in good standing in working province

  • 1+ years of clinical nursing experience (travel medicine background a plus, not required)

  • Comfortable working independently - you won't always have backup in the clinic

  • Strong patient communication and education skills

  • Reliable access to a personal computer (training systems require desktop or laptop)

  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet)

  • Current First Aid/CPR certification

  • Ability to lift and transport vaccine inventory as needed (up to 25 lbs)

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computers and peripherals.

  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting patients

  • Moves and restructures organization of storage room to make space for new inventory

  • Access to a reliable vehicle

Ideal For Nurses Who
  • Are adaptable - comfortable shifting gears between high-volume and consultative modes

  • Want the range of both clinic types without switching locations

  • Are reliable for weekend coverage and flexible with scheduling

Perks

  • Includes PAID lunch breaks.

  • Flexible hours.

  • Professional advancement opportunities available.

  • Enjoy a great work/ life balance with daytime hours and no overnight shifts.

  • Comprehensive orientation and paid training.

Ready to Apply?

If you're an experienced RPN who's ready for something different - a role where your clinical judgment is trusted and your patient relationships matter - we'd love to hear from you.
