Job description

Registered Nurse (RN) - Transfer Center - Weekend Program

Step into a role where your clinical expertise directly drives access to lifesaving care-every weekend. As a Registered Nurse in UVA Health's Transfer Center Weekend Program, you will operate at the center of a highly coordinated system that ensures patients receive advanced care when it matters most, while benefiting from a dedicated weekend-focused schedule designed for experienced clinicians seeking flexibility and impact.

This is more than a nontraditional RN role. It is a career-defining opportunity for nurses who thrive in high-acuity decision-making environments and want to influence patient outcomes at a systems level.

The Role:

As part of a newly formed and rapidly expanding department, the Transfer Center serves as the operational and clinical hub for patient movement into UVA Medical Center. Managing 800-1100 transfers per month, this team ensures that patients gain access to specialized services and higher levels of care that are not available elsewhere.

This Weekend Program position is ideal for experienced RNs seeking a consistent, concentrated schedule while remaining deeply engaged in complex, high-impact clinical work. You will function as the central clinical coordinator, balancing urgency, communication, and precision in real time.

In this role, you will experience a fast-paced, high-acuity environment where no two shifts are the same. An average day includes both independent clinical decision-making and constant collaboration across care teams:

  • Coordinate Patient Transfers by serving as the central point of contact, prioritizing cases based on acuity while ensuring EMTALA compliance

  • Act as a Clinical Liaison and Advocate, working closely with referring hospitals, physicians, and UVA care teams to ensure seamless patient transitions

  • Perform Advanced Triage and Telephonic Assessment, synthesizing clinical information and clearly communicating patient status to accepting providers

  • Leverage Technology including EPIC, patient flow platforms, and advanced communication systems to drive efficient and accurate coordination

  • Collaborate in Real Time with UVA physicians and interdisciplinary teams to determine appropriate placement and level of care

  • Recognize and Respond to Emergent Cases, escalating critical situations and facilitating rapid clinical decisions

  • Analyze and Document Patient Data to support quality outcomes, operational insight, and continuous improvement of transfer processes

This role demands broad clinical experience across multiple specialties, strong critical thinking, and the confidence to make high-impact decisions-all within a structured weekend schedule that supports work-life balance without sacrificing clinical intensity.

  • Weekend Program Details: Interested in working alongside some of the best clinicians in the country and joining an exceptional healthcare team, all while keeping your weekdays free? The UVA Health Weekend program may fit your lifestyle! The Weekend Program offers a weekend only shift schedule with enhanced hourly compensation. The Weekend Program is a 12-month commitment to work 48 scheduled weekends in a 52 week period beginning with first shift worked.

  • Strategic, High-Impact Role: Be a key contributor to a department managing patient access across regional, national, and global networks

  • Weekend Program Advantage: Benefit from a dedicated weekend schedule, offering flexibility while maintaining meaningful, high-level clinical engagement

  • New and Growing Department: Influence workflows, contribute to program development, and help define best practices in a rapidly evolving team
