What is a weekend copywriter?

Weekend copywriters are professionals who create written content, such as advertisements, articles, website copy, or social media posts, specifically during the weekends. They may work for agencies, companies, or as freelancers to meet deadlines, handle urgent projects, or provide coverage when regular staff are off. Weekend copywriters need strong writing skills, adaptability, and the ability to manage tight timelines. This role is ideal for those who prefer flexible schedules or want to supplement their income outside of traditional work hours.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a weekend copywriter?

To thrive as a Weekend Copywriter, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, often supported by a degree in communications, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and digital publishing platforms is typically required. Creativity, time management, and the ability to work independently under tight deadlines are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure high-quality, engaging content is delivered reliably on weekends, supporting continuous brand engagement and marketing objectives.

What challenges do weekend copywriters face and how can they be managed?

Weekend copywriters often work under tight deadlines and may need to handle last-minute requests or urgent campaigns, especially in fast-paced industries like digital marketing or news media. Balancing multiple projects while maintaining creativity and accuracy can be challenging, particularly when collaborating remotely with teams that may have limited availability on weekends. Effective time management, clear communication with project managers, and setting expectations about deliverables are key strategies for success. Many weekend copywriters also use project management tools to stay organized and ensure all assigned tasks are completed on schedule.

Job description

About Athena
Athena is a creative place for leaders, risk-takers, and boundary-pushers. We partner with organizations looking to transform their presence, reputation, and performance. For more than a decade, we've delivered business insights, marketing strategies, and brand activations for leading organizations across industries ranging from telecommunications to major league sports.
Our people make Athena, Athena. As a three-time Philadelphia Inquirer Top Workplace, we pride ourselves on fostering an environment where passion meets excellence. We are solutions-oriented, collaborative, and not afraid to roll up our sleeves to make work that works-while sharing a few laughs along the way.
About the Position
We're looking for a Copywriter who excels in helping cross-functional teams find creative and compelling ways to connect with their audiences. The role calls for great strategic thinking, flawless execution, ambition, and optimism. What kind of creative work will you do? We're glad you asked. Our work doesn't follow conventional Advertising, PR, Communications, or Marketing norms, so there's no typical creative brief. You'll handle both major concepts and detailed copy, collaborating with clients on storytelling, developing 360 campaigns, and brainstorming brand ideas throughout the day.
Requirements
What you'll be responsible for:
  • High-level concepting, tactical program ideation, copywriting, and copyediting for a wide range of brand experiences, social content, marketing deliverables, and business development materials.
  • Successfully communicating and presenting creative ideas, strategic rationale, and copy.
  • Collaborating with Athena team members from design, events, strategy, Account Management, and project management to produce smart, powerful work that delivers beyond the ask.
  • Strategically and creatively elevating existing work (presentations, print pieces, reports, website copy, etc.) from Athena's cross-functional teams.
  • Partnering with art directors and designers to create compelling 360 campaigns.
  • Translating complex and ambiguous concepts into simple and effective messages and deliverables.

The skills and experience you should have:
  • 3-5 years of copywriting experience in an agency, consultancy, in-house creative team, or similarly fast-paced marketing environment.
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual thinking and execution across integrated campaigns and brand experiences.
  • Excellent short-form and long-form writing skills across a variety of voices, tones, and formats.
  • Advanced grammar, editing, proofreading, and storytelling abilities.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop creative ideas rooted in audience insights and business objectives.
  • Experience partnering with designers, art directors, strategists, and cross-functional teams to create impactful creative work.
  • Ability to translate complex and ambiguous concepts into clear, persuasive messaging.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to articulate creative rationale to internal teams and clients.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven 360 advertising experience, writing copy across fully integrated campaigns (paid and organic social, digital, video, TV, experiential, OOH, CRM/email, web, and emerging channels).
  • High attention to detail and commitment to craft.
  • Curiosity about culture, trends, emerging platforms, and evolving creative best practice

It's a plus if you have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Advertising, Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in the sports, entertainment, automotive, or telecommunications industries.
  • Experience writing for regulated, complex, or highly technical industries.
  • Experience collaborating with analytics, research, or performance teams to optimize messaging.
  • Energy, a sense of humor, and an open and curious mind.
  • Strong understanding of contemporary culture, social platforms, and creative trends-and the judgment to distinguish between trends and enduring creative ideas.

Benefits
  • Medical/Dental benefits including a 1K Health Reimbursement Account
  • Matching 401K
  • Generous PTO policy
  • Substantial Parental Leave Policy
  • Hybrid Work Environment

Equal Opportunity Employer
Athena is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other basis prohibited by law.
