Job Description

The Boiler Operator monitors, maintains, and repairs boiler systems and related industrial equipment in a high-volume production environment. This role ensures safe and efficient operation of boilers and associated machinery, performs routine inspections and adjustments, and keeps detailed records of system performance. The position also supports general maintenance activities and contributes to a strong culture of safety and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Update work statuses and document all tasks completed in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) using a mobile device.
  • Monitor and maintain boilers to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Inspect fluids such as water, gas, and other media within boilers and related equipment, and make necessary adjustments to maintain proper operating levels and conditions.
  • Repair boiler machinery, including piping, valves, and associated components.
  • Replace defective or worn boiler parts to prevent downtime and maintain system reliability.
  • Record daily readings and operating parameters for boilers and related equipment.
  • Adjust equipment settings as needed to ensure the boiler system functions safely and within specified parameters.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of boiler rooms and related facilities.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and technical documentation to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Perform basic electrical and mechanical repairs on boiler systems and industrial equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on machines and systems to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Perform maintenance on industrial washers and dryers as required.
  • Follow standard maintenance procedures, including preventative maintenance schedules and proper safety techniques.
  • Use welding skills, hand tools, power tools, and work with electrical motors as needed for repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Work independently and as part of a team to complete assigned work on schedule, including overtime when required.
  • Comprehend and complete all required training and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support facility operations and equipment reliability.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with boiler maintenance, boiler systems, and boiler room operations.
  • Ability to monitor, adjust, and repair boiler machinery, including piping, valves, and related components.
  • Basic electrical and mechanical repair skills.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues on machines and systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documentation.
  • Dedication to promoting and maintaining a strong culture of safety.
  • Computer literacy, including familiarity with internet-based software and MS Office.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs routinely and occasionally up to 50 lbs, and perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, and lifting.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to work on a set shift schedule, including weekends, with overtime as required.
  • Familiarity with standard maintenance procedures, preventative maintenance schedules, and proper safety techniques.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements and consistently adhere to shift schedules.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Stationary Engineer License.
  • Skills in welding and use of hand and power tools.
  • Experience working with electrical motors.
  • Basic knowledge of industrial laundry equipment and related codes (nice to have, not required).
  • Experience with maintenance on industrial washers and dryers.
  • Mechanical knowledge and strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Troubleshooting experience with mechanical and electrical systems, including machine issues.
  • Ability to comprehend and perform all required training programs.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfort working from elevated heights using ladders, mezzanines, and aerial lifts.

Work Environment

Work takes place in a high-volume production warehouse setting that is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, as well as dust and noise. The role requires frequent movement, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of items weighing up to 50 lbs, along with regular bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, and lifting. Standing and walking for long periods of time are common. The position may involve working from elevated heights using ladders, mezzanines, and aerial lifts. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $36.65 - $36.65/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
