AspectWeekend Beer WriterBeer Blogger
CredentialsMay have journalism or writing experience, but no specific certifications requiredOften self-taught or hobbyists, no formal credentials needed
Work EnvironmentPart-time, freelance, or contract work, often in media or publication settingsFlexible, personal platform or website, often independent
Industry UsagePublished in newspapers, magazines, or online media with a focus on beer reviews and industry newsPersonal blogs, social media, or independent websites sharing beer experiences and reviews

The main difference is that Weekend Beer Writers typically contribute to established media outlets with a focus on journalism, while Beer Bloggers usually run personal platforms sharing their beer insights. Both roles involve writing about beer but differ in scope, credentials, and publication channels.

What are some common challenges faced by a weekend beer writer, and how can they be managed?

Weekend Beer Writers often juggle tight deadlines and the need to stay updated on rapidly changing trends in the craft beer industry. Balancing research, attending events, and producing engaging content within a limited timeframe can be challenging, especially during busy weekends when breweries host special releases or festivals. Building a network with local brewers and fellow writers can help streamline information gathering, while maintaining an organized content calendar ensures timely delivery of articles. Embracing a flexible writing style and staying curious about different beer styles and brewing techniques can also enhance your adaptability and appeal as a writer.

What is a weekend beer writer?

Weekend Beer Writers are freelance or part-time writers who specialize in creating content about beer, breweries, and beer culture, typically for publication on weekends. They may write reviews of new beers, cover local brewery events, interview brewers, or produce educational articles about beer styles and trends. Their work is often featured in magazines, blogs, newspapers, or online platforms dedicated to craft beer enthusiasts. This role requires strong writing skills, a passion for beer, and knowledge of the brewing industry.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a weekend beer writer?

To thrive as a Weekend Beer Writer, you need strong writing and research skills, in-depth knowledge of beer styles and brewing processes, and preferably a background in journalism or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), social media platforms, and basic photo editing tools is usually expected. Curiosity, creativity, and the ability to engage readers with a unique voice are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for producing compelling, accurate content that resonates with beer enthusiasts and drives engagement on weekends when readers are most active.

Job description

At Ko-Kwel Casino Resort, we know the best experiences start with a warm welcome. Whether you're arriving for a relaxing getaway or clocking in for your shift. Here, hospitality is personal, teamwork is real, and people genuinely look out for one another. When you join our team, you're stepping into a workplace where you can learn, grow, and take pride in creating memorable moments across the entire property. We bring energy, heart, and professionalism to everything we do, by building not only unforgettable guest experiences, but a workplace we're proud to call our own.

Be part of a team that's shaping one of the premier destinations for gaming and hospitality. A place where guests and team members alike feel right at home on Oregon's beautiful southern coast and beyond.

Why this job matters

Bring energy, personality, and exceptional service to Plank House Restaurant and Ko-Kwel Spirits by crafting great drinks, creating memorable moments, and ensuring every guest feels welcome from the first pour to the last goodbye. The Distillery/Restaurant Bartender delivers exceptional guest service while representing the Ko-Kwel Spirits brand. This role blends high-end mixology and hospitality with brand education, offering guests handcrafted cocktails, curated spirit tastings, and memorable experiences that showcase our culture and craftmanship. In addition to preparing beverages this position actively promotes and sells Cask Club memberships, building brand loyalty and driving guest engagement. The bartender serves as both an ambassador for the distillery and a key contributor to the overall guest experience.

What you bring to the table
  • Make sure the space stays safe, clean, and friendly for both guests and the rest of the team; speak up and report any safety concerns to the Safety Committee.
  • Serve up signature cocktails, cold brews, and delicious bites while fostering a lively, welcoming bar and lounge atmosphere.
  • Conduct guided tastings of Ko-Kwel Spirits products, providing educational and engaging storytelling about the distillation process, flavor profiles and brand heritage.
  • Actively promote and sell Cask Club memberships, sharing detailed knowledge of the program and its benefits.
  • Create and serve signature cocktails and spirit flights that highlight the distillery's portfolio.
  • Demonstrate a deep menu knowledge and assist with recommendations, pairings, and upselling of Ko-Kwel Spirits.
  • Maintain speed, accuracy and consistency during high-volume or peak service periods.
  • Confidently open and close the bar/tasting room, ensuring everything runs smoothly and all side work is completed with care.
  • Prioritize guest safety by practicing responsible alcohol service and staying alert to guest awareness at all times while keeping communication open with teammates and supervisors.
  • Protect the trust of both guests and team members by upholding confidentiality at all times.
  • Jump in where needed to support the team and keep things running smoothly. (Other duties as assigned)
Must-haves, nice-to-haves, and maybe some bonus points
  • Friendly and approachable attitude that helps guests (and the team) feel welcome and cared for every day.
  • Experience helpful but not required. Previous experience in hospitality field with demonstrated excellent customer service ability.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Must have valid OLCC permit and working knowledge of OLCC regulations.
  • Must have a food handler's card and meet health, safety and sanitation standards at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully navigate the point-of-sale system and accurately manage a cash bank, credit card activity, and balance with corresponding paperwork at the end of your shift.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform your duties with a minimum of supervision and handle multiple priorities and tasks.
  • Comfortable communicating clearly and positively with both guests and teammates.
  • Must pass and remain in compliance with Coquille Gaming Commission background check and drug free workplace policies.
Physical stuff to know

We've included the typical physical parts of the job here. If you need an accommodation to do the work, just let us know-we're here to support you. You'll need to be available to work weekends, holidays, and evenings when we are busy. During your shift, you'll be on your feet standing for extended periods, and frequently walk, and use your hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds frequently and be able to understand how to use equipment to safely maneuver a full keg of beer, carry cases of bottled beer with a hand truck, bend, twist, reach and otherwise be physically limber as duties necessitate. Occasionally sit. It's important to stay calm and make good decisions under pressure, especially when dealing with stressful situations or upset people. Just a heads-up-the casino environment may expose you to secondhand smoke. This is a quick summary of the main duties and requirements-it might not cover everything you could be asked to do.

Ko-Kwel Casino Resort is owned by the Coquille Indian Tribe. Team members are eligible for a comprehensive health care benefit, generous time off policy, 401-K retirement with 4% company match and other benefits.
