Job description

Position Highlights
Reporting to the Head Athletic Trainer, the Athletic Trainer supports the medical needs for all 22 intercollegiate NCAA Division III sports and 2 Division I sports (men's and women's ice hockey). This person will be responsible for prevention, evaluation, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses associated with athletes involved in intercollegiate athletics. The incumbent will adhere to NCAA bylaws and policies, possess and maintain NATA-BOC certification, possess or be eligible for New York state licensure, travel, work weekends and odd hours, supervise student employees, and function under team physician oversight.
The incumbent will demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to University, department and NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, League and division rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the department are to be reported to the appropriate parties. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated track record of success. They should also have strong organizational skills and an ability to work independently.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Identifies, assesses, evaluates, mitigates, and manages student-athlete injury prevention and care
  • Implements rehabilitation and treatment programs for intercollegiate athletes. Maintains appropriate documentation and communication with coaches, athletes, and healthcare professionals to share injury updates, treatment plans, and athlete progress
  • Provides injury risk management for athletes. Prepares student-athletes for practice and competition via athletic stretching and supportive taping, bandaging, and bracing as appropriate to individual student, sport, and situation
  • Collects, compiles, and facilitates athlete physical participation status forms, including orthopedic assessment to evaluate for risk management
  • Facilitates athlete referrals for care through physicians, surgeons, therapists, and specialists
  • Assists with the facilitation of the athletics drug and alcohol-testing program through athlete notification, oral fluid sample collection, documentation, and sample shipment for analysis
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, therapeutic modalities, and therapeutic rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) conferences and university rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of athletic prevention and treatment processes
  • Skill in evaluating, diagnosing, and managing acute and chronic sports injuries accurately
  • Ability to manage and maintain confidential and private information
  • Ability to provide autonomous care while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams

Minimum Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 2 years of related experience
  • Board of Certification for Athletic Training
  • National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certification
  • New York State Athletic Training Licensure (or ability to obtain with 30 days of employment)
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification

Problems are varied and non-routine, and resolution requires exercising judgment, analysis, advisement, creativity, and understanding broader sets of issues.
