Weekend Application Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Application Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Application Developer, you need proficiency in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software development principles, and a relevant degree or coding certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and development frameworks is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective remote communication are essential soft skills. These skills enable you to efficiently deliver high-quality software solutions while collaborating with teams or clients in a condensed weekend timeframe.

What are the common challenges faced by Weekend Application Developers, and how can they be addressed?

Weekend Application Developers often face the challenge of limited collaboration with full-time team members, since much of the team may not be available during weekends. To address this, clear communication and thorough documentation are essential, ensuring that work transitions smoothly between shifts. Additionally, weekend developers may need to be more self-sufficient, managing issues independently and coordinating progress updates for handoffs. Regular check-ins with the weekday team and using collaborative tools can help bridge any gaps and maintain project momentum.

What are Weekend Application Developers?

Weekend Application Developers are software professionals who focus on designing, coding, testing, and maintaining applications during weekends or outside standard business hours. These roles are often filled by individuals who support ongoing projects, address urgent technical issues, or contribute to development tasks that require off-hours attention. Employers may hire weekend developers to ensure continuous progress on projects, minimize downtime, or provide 24/7 support for critical systems. This position typically requires strong programming skills, familiarity with development tools, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Job description

Building Controls Application Engineer
Do you want to work on the front lines of deploying autonomous building systems? Are you excited to get hands-on with controls, intelligent building automation systems, and IoT technology in the field? PassiveLogic is looking for a Building Controls Application Engineer to deploy and support our hardware-software infrastructure in real-world environments.
About PassiveLogic®
PassiveLogic is the first fully autonomous platform for buildings. We've reinvented the fundamental principles of automation to democratize technology, optimize buildings, and reduce the world's carbon footprint. We are a team of technologists, engineers, and creatives dedicated to making a sustainable impact through real-world solutions.
We are looking for team members who have a passion for technology and who want to work on cutting-edge problems with real-world solutions. Our culture is built on bringing together the most talented engineers, thinkers, and creatives-backed by the world's leading investors-working together to make the future a reality.
About the Role
This is a career-defining opportunity to play a crucial role in a hyper-scale AI company that is transforming the future of autonomous systems, energy, and the built environment.
As a Building Controls Application Engineer, you will be responsible for PL tech ecosystem deployments into partners' buildings. This role is pivotal. You will be directly working on (and responsible for) taking technology from our offices and integrating it into buildings in support of our mission to empower people through generative autonomy to solve the world's largest climate challenges.
This will be an extraordinary opportunity to supercharge your career, working in a global environment deploying cutting-edge technology to enable the first generation of intelligent, autonomous infrastructure in our cities.
What you'll do
Real-world applications: Generate building, system, and site digital twins via the PassiveLogic Quantum standard.
Field Hive support and deployment: Commission, configure, and validate Hive systems (among other PL hardware and software tech) in the field.
System diagnostics: Investigate and resolve HVAC and control system issues using trend data and logs; formally test and validate a variety of PassiveLogic products and internal services.
Documentation: Record and standardize deployment procedures for scalability.
Collaborate across teams: Work closely with engineering, product, and customer success to ensure smooth deployments and robust performance.
What you'll bring
We want to work with proactive, resourceful engineers who get excited about working in real environments, solving live problems, and pushing the boundaries of intelligent control. This is a hands-on role that puts you in the middle of the action, helping buildings across the globe run smarter and more sustainably. Your work will inform our technology, improve product development, and drive real-world innovation.
You must have
  • Proven experience:
    • HVAC controls experience and familiarity with control sequences
    • Linux OS experience
    • Past work with legacy building control systems and real-world deployments
    • HVAC trend data analysis and troubleshooting
  • Exceptional communication skills: Extraordinary teammate skills with a collaborative, interpersonal communication style. Strong customer-facing skills with an ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Organized and strategic: Creative thinker and strong problem solver with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Collaborative mindset: Experience working across teams to drive customer success. Strong self-motivation towards PassiveLogic's mission to "empower people through generative autonomy to solve the world's largest climate challenges."
  • Adaptability: Comfortable in a fast-paced startup environment, eager to learn, iterate, and innovate.
  • Problem solving: You own this role. When issues arise, be the empowered force that solves them, rolling-up.

You should have
  • Database querying experience (GraphQL, SQL, JQ, etc.)
  • Linux terminal familiarity (SSH, command line, system logs, systemd)
  • Experience with Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, or embedded platforms
  • HVAC systems background (mechanical or electrical)
  • Familiarity with Git for version control

It's helpful to have
  • Experience having built your own PC or hacking hardware projects

We know there are candidates who might not fit everything we've described above, or who might have experience and skills we haven't considered. PassiveLogic can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities to the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background. Even if you don't meet all the requirements above, we still want to hear from you.
Compensation, Benefits & Perks:
  • Competitive compensation
  • Generous equity share package
  • Pension plan
  • Paid time off
  • Commute coverage (NS Business Card or car allowance)
  • In-office Lunch
  • Fun office-wide activities quarterly!
  • Worldwide ski/snowboard pass

When applying, include:
  • A cover letter telling us why you're the perfect candidate for PassiveLogic
  • A resume
  • Extra mile - include a description of a project (of any type) you personally created, devised, built, managed, organized, or designed that was of your own self-initiative
