Laboratory Supervisor - Clinical Laboratory

As a Laboratory Supervisor, you will provide day-to-day oversight of inpatient and outpatient laboratory operations and personnel. You will lead clinical laboratory operations, support the Laboratory and Pathology services, monitor quality and performance, and collaborate with laboratory leadership, pathologists, technologists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, accurate, timely, and high-quality laboratory services.

A typical day for a Laboratory Supervisor may include:
• Supervise, coordinate, and participate in activities involving routine, standardized biological and biochemical testing, as well as more complex procedures performed on blood and other specimens to support diagnosis and clinical management of patients.
• Provide day-to-day supervision and oversight of laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results across day, evening, and night shifts.
• Provide accessible technical consultation to testing personnel whenever testing is performed, including on-site, telephone, or electronic support, to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Laboratory Director.
• Recognize test results, technical issues, or operational problems requiring referral to the Medical Director, Administrative Director, Manager, or other appropriate leadership.
• Manage the daily operations of the clinical laboratory department and provide leadership and direction to laboratory staff.
• Work closely with the Laboratory Director and/or Manager to coordinate administrative, technical, fiscal, educational, and operational activities necessary to provide quality laboratory services.
• Collaborate across multidisciplinary groups representing the clinical laboratories and Pathology service.
• Organize, develop, plan, and implement departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary to support quality patient care.
• Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure established acceptance levels of analytical performance are maintained.
• Implement, enforce, and monitor quality control, quality assurance, service, safety, regulatory, and compliance programs and indicators.
• Maintain all departmental quality and service standards and ensure compliance with applicable organizational and regulatory requirements.
• Assist the Administrative Director or designee with reports, including productivity, quality, operational performance, and recommendations for improvement.
• Monitor departmental productivity, quality, and turnaround-time (TAT) metrics and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Supervise, train, mentor, and assess the competency of laboratory staff.
• Participate in employee interviews, hiring decisions, corrective action processes, and other staff-management activities as appropriate.
• Conduct and/or contribute to annual employee performance evaluations.
• Hold staff meetings and maintain appropriate meeting minutes and documentation.
• Prepare, review, revise, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), manuals, and other departmental documentation.
• Participate in inventory control and ensure adequate availability of supplies, reagents, and other materials necessary for laboratory operations.
• Maintain adherence to the department budget and assist with fiscal management of laboratory resources.
• Document and complete special projects and assigned operational initiatives in a timely manner.
• Oversee the cleanliness, organization, and overall condition of the laboratory environment.
• Troubleshoot technical, equipment, instrumentation, and computer-related problems and escalate issues appropriately.
• Participate in validation of laboratory methodologies and instrumentation.
• Support appropriate reporting of departmental activities and performance to the Administrative Director.
• Assist Pathologists with the educational process for medical students, technologists, and other learners.
• Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures as needed to support departmental operations.
• Maintain specialized knowledge of Chemistry and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a high-volume, labor-intensive clinical laboratory department.
• Recognize and appropriately escalate problems or results that require Medical Director or administrative review.
• Respond to emergency laboratory situations and remain available during off-hours as required.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as requested by the Medical Director, Administrative Director, Manager, or designee.
Schedule:
• Monday through Friday with rotating weekends.
• Must be available to respond during off-hours for emergency cases.

• You enjoy developing employees, supporting competency, and fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• You are comfortable troubleshooting laboratory equipment, instrumentation, computer systems, and technical issues.
• You are organized and able to manage departmental projects, documentation, productivity metrics, and operational initiatives.
• You are comfortable working with laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
To be considered for this Laboratory Supervisor opportunity, you must:
• Have a BS/BA degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science, or a related field.
• Meet the requirements for General Laboratory Supervisor qualifications under applicable New Jersey Sanitary Code requirements, including N.J. Sanitary Code Chapter 44, Chapter IV, 8:44-2.4, as applicable.
• Meet all applicable College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) requirements.
• Hold an MLS(ASCP) certification or similar nationally recognized laboratory certification as required.
• Master's degree preferred.
• Experience managing a clinical laboratory team within a large hospital organization or trauma center.
  • Experience with Cobas Pro, Pure, Sysmex, Clinitek
  • Specialized experience in Hematology

• Current or recent experience as a Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager.
• Specialized experience in Chemistry.
• Experience with Vista, GEMS, and/or Cobas Pro.
• Experience with EPIC Laboratory Information System (LIS) preferred.
• Experience supporting Pathology education for medical students, technologists, or other healthcare learners.
