Job description

Position Summary
The Pre-Admission Testing Registered Nurse is responsible for ensuring patient readiness for surgery by obtaining medical histories, educating patients on pre-surgery procedures, documenting screening calls, and correlating clinical data with medical and nursing care. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with patients, families, and healthcare team members. Additionally, the RN takes part in training new team members, maintains patient privacy, and provides pre- and post-operative support. They are accountable for achieving patient outcomes through the implementation of critical pathways and adherence to the facility's philosophy, standards of practice, and governing regulations.
Essential Functions
  • Obtaining the patients' medical and surgical history, including medication, allergies, and reactions.
  • Able to interpret and follow the PAT guidelines as set by the ASC.
  • Educate, review, and provide the instructions in preparation of surgery.
  • Appropriately documents the details of the screening call.
  • Ability to correlate clinical data with patient's medical and nursing care.
  • Ability to set priorities to facilitate the efficient flow of patients to the OR and PACU.
  • Ability to provide clear and concise direction to others to promote efficiency in clinical areas.
  • Effective communication skills with patients, families, teammates, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Assesses, plans, evaluates, and ensures the implementation of patient care from admission to discharge to achieve identified outcomes.
  • Demonstrates the ability to direct and provide patient care in emergency situations per physician and administrative policies.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates proper knowledge and competence in skills identified for the position.
  • Promotes physical comfort, emotional support, and safety for patients and their families.
  • Verifies surgical/procedure site with the patient, obtains consents, reconciles medications, and reviews discharge instructions.
  • Accurately completes and audits nursing documentation for each patient.
  • Initiates IV access and administers pre-operative medications per physician orders.
  • Reviews and updates physician's pre-operative and post-operative orders and instructions.
  • Practices and monitors aseptic techniques.
  • Respects the patient's right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Positions the patient with attention to body alignment, airway maintenance, and circulation.
  • Maintains, stocks, and replenishes supplies for both pre-operative and PACU departments. Notifies proper staff to order supplies as needed.
  • Assists physicians and anesthesia personnel as needed.
  • Performs pre-operative and post-operative phone calls to patients, obtains pre-anesthesia assessments, reviews pre-op instructions, and follows up after surgery.
  • Operates, cleans, and cares for equipment according to procedure.
  • Checks and documents that defibrillators and all emergency equipment are in working order each morning.
  • Ensure that all necessary medications are available each morning and communicates with Leadership or Materials Manager if medications need to be ordered.
  • Performs a correct narcotic count with another RN or licensed personnel at the beginning and end of the day.
Other Related Functions
  • Will help in Preoperative and Recovery when needed.
  • Assists with Medical record management as needed.
  • Maintains a neat and organized environment that promotes safety.
  • Maintains attendance according to facility guidelines and policies.
  • Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness per departmental procedures and requests time off according to the established procedure.
  • Completes all teammate/patient event and variance documentation in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Attends unit-based staff meetings and reviews minutes for any meetings missed.
  • Maintains certification requirements and submits required certifications to facility management.
  • Strives to be professional, courteous, helpful, and cooperative, interacting with all patients, families, visitors, and employees in a mature, positive manner.
  • Follows Infection Prevention and Control guidelines. Notify Clinical Manager of any suspicion of a possible cross contamination.
  • Complies with OSHA and Joint Commission standards, HIPAA regulations, and all facility policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the manager.
Education/Training
  • Registered Nurse for Three (3) plus years required.
  • Pre & Post Operative of two (2) plus years is desirable.
  • Pre-Admission Testing of two (2) plus years is required.
Licensure/Certification
  • Registered Nurse (RN) License in Florida
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required based on ASC patient minimum age.
Experience
  • Two (2) plus years of experience Multi-Specialty Ambulatory Surgery Center, Outpatient Surgery, Emergency Room, Med Surg, and/or Intensive Care Unit required.
  • Building strong relationships with Physicians.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bilingual preferred.
