Job description

Description
The Department of Marine Science at The University of Texas at Austin is built around research strengths in organismal biology, ecology, and (bio)geochemistry and seeks to fill three open-rank faculty positions in marine science. Individuals with strong records in phytoplankton physiology or ecology, macroinvertebrate physiology or ecology, benthic ecology, isotope and/or nutrient biogeochemistry, or inorganic geochemistry are especially encouraged to apply. Strong applicants in other areas of marine science will also be considered. Exceptionally qualified senior applicants may be considered for the H-E-B Endowed Chair in Marine Science. Successful applicants for these positions will be expected to establish a nationally or internationally recognized, extramurally funded research program and mentor research personnel (75% of time commitment) and teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels (25%).
The positions are located at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas, which holds strong collaborative ties to the research community in Austin and is in the process of expanding. The Department's rigorous graduate degree program and "Semester by the Sea" undergraduate program are located at the Institute. The Institute has state-of-the-art laboratories, seawater-supplied facilities for experimental research on marine fauna, and close proximity to a diverse range of marine habitats. These include near-pristine to highly anthropogenically altered estuarine ecosystems (open water, seagrasses, mangroves, saltmarshes, microbial mats, oyster reefs), with salinities ranging from oligohaline to hypersaline, as well as near- and offshore habitats of the Gulf of Mexico. The institute hosts the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research program, Fisheries and Mariculture Laboratory complex, full-service core analytical facilities, and a fleet of research vessels. A Center for Coastal Ocean Science is being established to support experiment-based organismal research in marine environmental science.
Qualifications
We seek applicants with a strong record of high-quality research, publications, extramural funding concomitant to the rank sought, as well as commitment to excellence in mentorship and teaching that serves trainees from varied backgrounds. A PhD or equivalent is required and postdoctoral research experience is strongly recommended. Candidates applying for an Associate or Full Professor appointment will undergo a tenure assessment prior to being offered a position at our research-intensive institution.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following via Interfolio: (i) a cover letter, (ii) a current CV, (iii) a research statement (up to 3 pages), (iv) a teaching statement (up to 2 pages), (v) contact information for three to five referees (letters will be requested for top candidates), and (vi) three to five reprints of representative publications. Applicants are encouraged to highlight throughout their application their relevant experiences and skillsets in supporting academic success of all students (e.g., their specific approaches for teaching, mentoring, research and /or scholarly work). Applications received prior to December 15 will receive full consideration. For additional information about the Institute and Department, see https://www.utmsi.utexas.edu.
Background check conducted on applicant selected.
