This position is for the role of Electrical/Controls Engineer on the Midwest Regulated & Renewable Energy (RRE) - Engineering Team in the Midwest. This role will support resolution of technical issues and perform engineering design for a diverse mix of generation including coal, natural gas, hydro, and solar facilities. This role will provide engineering support, focusing on power plant systems and equipment at the generating stations within the region. The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
  • Facilitate MER Meetings to review risk items and develop scope and budget recommendations for future inspections.
  • Collaborate with COSO and Station/Plant Engineers to initiate project requests in PowerPlan long range planning
  • Support Risk Grid items with Station/Plant Engineer and Technical Manager for entry to the Station Risk Grid.
  • Provide technical oversight and support station operations, maintenance, and Implementation Managers for emergent technical requests, outages, and projects
  • Document inspection findings and provide Station/Plant Engineer and/or COSO prioritized repair recommendations.

Basic Qualifications
  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Desired Qualifications
  • Electrical Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program
  • Experience with Power Plant or industrial electrical or control equipment.
  • DCS programming or tuning experience
  • DCS system development, construction, or upkeep of physical hardware (Evergreens, etc.)
  • Simulator system development and programming
  • Instrumentation knowledge - temperature, pressure, flow, density and applicable transmitters
  • Alarm management and rationalization experience
  • Experience with medium and high voltage equipment - motors, breakers, switchgear, transformers, electrical bus, generators, instrumentation
  • Functional knowledge and implementation of electrical system protection including protection schemes, breaker coordination, relay operations and maintenance including compliance requirements
  • Knowledge of electrical testing protocols and in-field application
  • Demonstrated experience showing familiarity and knowledge of IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and other applicable codes and standards.

Working Conditions
  • Onsite mobility classification.
  • Performs work in an office and power plant environment
  • Approximately 30-50% travel mostly within the region.
  • Work location for this position will be at the Gibson Generation Station. The hiring manager may elect to base this position at another Midwest generating facility (Cayuga, Edwardsport, East Bend) if the successful candidate is currently located at that facility.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
