What is a Web3?

A Web3 job involves working with decentralized technologies like blockchain, smart contracts, and cryptocurrencies. These roles span various sectors, including development, marketing, security, and product management, focusing on building decentralized applications (dApps) and protocols. Web3 jobs require knowledge of blockchain ecosystems such as Ethereum, Solana, or Polkadot, often demanding skills in Solidity, Rust, or other programming languages. Positions are typically remote and community-driven, emphasizing decentralization and token-based incentives.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in Web3?

To thrive in a Web3 role, you need strong proficiency in blockchain technologies, smart contract development (often using Solidity or Rust), cryptography, and decentralized applications (dApps), typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Ethereum, Solana, web3.js, and version control systems, as well as industry certifications such as Certified Blockchain Developer, is often expected. Adaptability, problem-solving, and collaborative communication skills help you navigate the rapidly-evolving landscape and work across interdisciplinary teams. These capabilities are crucial to effectively build secure, scalable decentralized systems and keep pace with innovation in the blockchain space.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in Web3?

Professionals in Web3 roles often encounter the challenge of keeping up with fast-changing technologies, security vulnerabilities, and decentralized governance models. Since the industry is still evolving, there can be uncertainty around regulatory compliance and best practices, making adaptability and continuous learning essential. Collaboration with product teams, legal experts, and community members is common, as projects often have open-source and global components. Additionally, debugging smart contracts and ensuring interoperability across different blockchains are regular technical hurdles. Embracing these challenges can make the work dynamic and provide unique learning and growth opportunities.

How do I get into Web3?

To get into Web3, develop skills in blockchain technology, smart contract programming (e.g., Solidity), and decentralized applications. Gaining experience through online courses, contributing to open-source projects, and understanding cryptography and decentralized finance (DeFi) can improve your prospects in the field.

Is Web3 a good career path?

Web3 is a growing field focused on decentralized technologies like blockchain and smart contracts, with roles such as blockchain developer, smart contract engineer, and decentralized application (dApp) developer. These positions often require skills in programming languages like Solidity and understanding of cryptography, and they typically offer high demand and competitive salaries. As the industry evolves, continuous learning and staying updated on new protocols are important for long-term success.

What are the Web3 jobs?

Web3 jobs include roles such as blockchain developers, smart contract engineers, decentralized application (dApp) developers, blockchain architects, and community managers. These positions often require knowledge of blockchain platforms like Ethereum, Solidity programming, and understanding of decentralized finance (DeFi) or non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Job description

REQUIREMENT

Digital Assets Web3 Engineer
NYC NY / Jersey City NJ
Fulltime
The successful candidate will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of Web3-native components and integrations that power Citi's digital asset infrastructure spanning tokenization, smart contracts, on-chain settlement, and blockchain protocol integrations. You will work within a collaborative, globally distributed team of engineers, architects, and business technologists who are building the next generation of institutional digital finance capabilities.
We are looking for someone who brings strong Web3 engineering fundamentals, a curiosity for emerging blockchain ecosystems, and the ability to bridge decentralized technology patterns with enterprise-grade software standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and deploy Web3 components and integrations for Citi's Digital Asset Platform, including smart contracts, on-chain event listeners, wallet integrations, and blockchain protocol connectors
  • Build and maintain backend services that interface with public and permissioned blockchain networks (e.g., Ethereum, Hyperledger Besu, Corda, or equivalent)
  • Develop, test, and audit smart contracts written in Solidity or equivalent languages, ensuring security, correctness, and gas efficiency
  • Integrate Web3 libraries and SDKs (e.g., Web3J, Web3JS, Ethers.js, Viem) into enterprise Java and/or Node.js backend services
  • Implement asynchronous, event-driven architectures to handle on-chain events, transaction lifecycle management, and blockchain state synchronization
  • Collaborate with architects and senior engineers to contribute to the design of scalable, secure, and resilient Web3 infrastructure
  • Participate in code reviews, providing and receiving constructive technical feedback to maintain high engineering standards
  • Support the integration of digital asset custody solutions, tokenization frameworks, and DeFi/TradFi bridging components
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including smart contract specifications, integration guides, and architecture notes
  • Stay current with the rapidly evolving Web3 ecosystem tracking protocol upgrades, new token standards, Layer 2 solutions, and emerging tooling relevant to institutional use cases
  • Work within Agile/Scrum frameworks, participating in sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives within a distributed global team
  • Help identify and resolve technical issues across the Web3 stack, escalating where appropriate to ensure delivery quality and timelines
Qualifications / Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline; MS is a plus
  • 8+ years of overall software engineering experience, with a strong backend development foundation
