Job description

Jaster Engineering Technology (JET) Systems develops, maintains, and innovates systems for specific and common mission capabilities, combat aides, and surveillance systems. We provide solutions through cost-effective, tailored strategies to meet mission requirements. JET is committed to working with government agencies and commercial partners to develop modern autonomous and operator-interfaced control systems. The Software Engineer - Data Applications supports a small product development team responsible for designing, developing, testing, and sustaining web-based data applications and analytical tools. The role will contribute to the continued development of internal and customer directed products by translating user needs into reliable software capabilities, improving existing features, resolving defects, and supporting product demonstrations and releases. This position reports to the Product Development Team Lead and may be filled by a strong new graduate or an experienced software professional. 

The Software Engineer - Data Applications position supports a hybrid work environment, providing flexibility for in-person and remote work based on program and customer needs. Candidates must reside within the St. Mary’s County/ NAS Pax River commuting area and be available to report onsite as required. The successful candidate must be able to collaborate effectively with a small technical team, work within established product architectures and development practices, and communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance in the future, if requested. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain features for web-based data applications, workflow tools, and analytical systems. 
  • Support the continued development and sustainment of internal and customer-facing software products. 
  • Translate functional needs, user feedback, and product requirements into practical software designs and working capabilities. 
  • Develop and maintain application components using languages and technologies such as Python, JavaScript, React, HTML, CSS, and related frameworks or libraries. 
  • Create, enhance, and troubleshoot data-processing logic, user interfaces, APIs, database interactions, reports, and application workflows. 
  • Write readable, maintainable, and well-documented code that follows team standards, source-control practices, and established application architectures. 
  • Perform unit, integration, system, regression, and user-focused testing to verify functionality, reliability, and expected behavior. 
  • Investigate defects, reproduce reported issues, identify root causes, implement corrections, and document resolution results. 
  • Use Git-based source control and software collaboration tools to manage branches, commits, pull requests, code reviews, issues, and release activities. 
  • Participate in Agile or iterative development activities, including planning, backlog refinement, stand-ups, demonstrations, reviews, and retrospectives. 
  • Work with product leads, analysts, data specialists, developers, and end users to clarify needs and improve product usability and value. 
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including design notes, configuration instructions, test results, release notes, and user-support materials. 
  • Learn unfamiliar technologies and product domains quickly and apply that knowledge to produce immediate, practical value. 
  • Perform other software development, testing, documentation, data-support, or product-support duties as assigned. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field; candidates completing the final year of an accredited degree program may also be considered. 
  • Foundational knowledge of software development principles, object-oriented or functional programming concepts, and the software development life cycle. 
  • Programming experience in at least one general-purpose language such as Python, Java, C/C++, C#, JavaScript, Ruby, or a comparable language. 
  • Working knowledge of web-development concepts, including front-end interfaces, back-end logic, APIs, databases, and client-server communication. 
  • Ability to query, transform, validate, and work with structured or semi-structured data using SQL, Python, or similar tools. 
  • Understanding of software testing concepts, including unit, integration, system, regression, and acceptance testing. 
  • Basic knowledge of version control and collaborative development workflows, preferably using Git. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot software behavior methodically and document problems, findings, and solutions clearly. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams. 
  • Ability to work independently under general direction while also contributing effectively within a small development team. 
  • Demonstrated curiosity, adaptability, attention to detail, and willingness to take ownership of assigned work  
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to pass a background check. 
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance in the future, if requested. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Professional, internship, academic, or personal-project experience developing software applications, data tools, workflow systems, or analytical products. 
  • Experience with Python and modern web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS, React, or comparable frameworks. 
  • Experience with relational databases, SQL, data modeling, APIs, or structured and semi-structured data formats. 
  • Experience using development and collaboration tools such as Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo, GitHub, GitLab, or similar platforms. 
  • Exposure to automated testing, continuous integration, deployment pipelines, container technologies, or cloud-based development environments. 
  • Experience deriving or refining requirements and translating them into software designs, user stories, acceptance criteria, or testable capabilities. 
  • Experience supporting product demonstrations, user feedback sessions, software releases, or operational customer support. 
  • Experience with defense, government, aviation, logistics, readiness, or other mission-oriented software environments is preferred.
