Web Design Engineer

Base Power Company

Austin, TX โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 14 days ago

Job description

About Base
Base is America's next-generation power company. We're rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization-electricity-by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that is transforming today's fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. We are engineers, operators, and creatives solving some of the most complex, interdisciplinary challenges of our time.
About the Role
BasePowerCompany.com is one of the most important tools we have. It's where curious homeowners decide whether they can trust Base and where future partners evaluate us. Right now, no one person owns it end-to-end.
We're hiring a web design engineer to change that. You'll own the website: the code, the design, the copy, and the metrics. You'll be accountable for what it does for Base's growth and work closely with Growth, Design, and Marketing to turn campaigns and product launches into web experiences that perform. You'll also bring your own point of view on what this site should say, how it should feel, and what's holding it back.
This is the right role if you're equally comfortable in Figma and your terminal, and frustrated by orgs where design and engineering never talk.
What You'll Do
  • Own basepowercompany.com end-to-end: architecture, design, copy, and performance.
  • Build and ship pages in Next.js, React, and Tailwind: landing pages, campaign pages, product launches, and iterative improvements.
  • Maintain visual consistency and brand quality across every page and breakpoint.
  • Write and shape website copy in Base's voice, working closely with Marketing and Design.
  • Design and run A/B and multivariate experiments to improve conversion, engagement, and member quality.
  • Own technical SEO and site performance: Core Web Vitals, structured data, page speed, and crawlability.
  • Build and maintain a component library that makes future development faster and more consistent.
  • Build AI-powered web features and design the workflows (prompts, agents, data pipelines) that make the team faster and the site smarter.
  • Collaborate with Growth, Design, Product, and Engineering to translate business goals into web experiences.

What You'll Bring
  • 5-8 years working at the intersection of web design and front-end development, with a portfolio that proves both.
  • Production-quality Next.js, React, and Tailwind skills. You've shipped real things, not just prototypes.
  • A sharp design eye: typography, spacing, hierarchy, motion. You notice when something is off by 4px.
  • Comfort writing and editing copy. You can shape a headline, not just implement one.
  • Hands-on experience with PostHog: feature flags, session replay, experiments, and funnel analysis.
  • Comfort building with AI: designing workflows, prompting models, and integrating AI features into production web experiences.
  • Strong SEO and performance fundamentals: Core Web Vitals, semantic HTML, structured data, rendering strategies.
  • Proficiency in Figma. You move fluidly between design and code.
  • Self-directed. You can hold the full scope of a web project in your head and ship without constant oversight.

About this team
The Growth team is responsible for turning interest in Base into action. basepowercompany.com is our most important acquisition surface, the place where a homeowner decides whether to trust us with their power. Our challenges are concrete: we're explaining a new category of product in a market full of noise, and every word and interaction on the site either earns that trust or loses it. The decisions you make here will show up directly in sign-ups, cost-per-acquisition, and the quality of members we bring on.
Please note: Base is a startup, which means priorities shift and evolve quickly. Your role may expand or change based on the needs of the business at any given time, so the responsibilities listed may not be exhaustive.
Our Values
  • First Principles Thinking: Question assumptions. Principles > rules.
  • Operate at Base Pace: Focus on what matters, act quickly, and learn by doing.
  • Give & Get Feedback: Be direct, be humble, and maintain a growth mindset.
  • Everyone's an Owner: Follow through on commitments and own results.
  • Strong Opinions, Loosely Held: Drive clarity and make calls with imperfect information.
  • Committed to the Mission: Rebuilding the grid is a big challenge. We work hard because we care deeply about the impact we're creating. We work in-person. It's not a 9-to-5. We are all-in.
  • Fun & Optimism Coexist with Grit: Collaboration and celebration coincide with the intensity of building real things.
Do the best work of your life at Base.
