What is a web developer manager?

A Web Developer Manager is a professional responsible for leading and managing a team of web developers. They oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of websites or web applications, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. In addition to technical expertise, they coordinate project tasks, mentor team members, and serve as a liaison between developers and other stakeholders. Their role often includes setting development standards, implementing best practices, and staying updated with the latest web technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer manager?

To thrive as a Web Developer Manager, you need a strong background in web development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), web frameworks (such as React or Angular), and version control systems (like Git) is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentorship abilities help you guide your team and foster collaboration. These skills ensure that development projects are delivered efficiently, meet business goals, and encourage a productive and motivated team environment.

How does a web developer manager typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

As a Web Developer Manager, you are often required to strike a balance between leading your team and participating in technical work. You’re not expected to be a developer, but you are expected to handle simple CMS fixes and partner with our web development agency to scope more complex needs.

You will own page production and performance across the marketing website, translating strategy into high-quality, conversion-oriented experiences throughout the customer journey. You’ll work within an established system but are expected to challenge it by identifying UX, layout, and performance gaps and implementing improvements.

You’ll join a small, highly collaborative marketing web team that spans content, SEO, AEO, operations, and design. Because of our size, we rely on people who can work across disciplines, move quickly, identify opportunities that improve how we operate, and implement solutions without relying heavily on engineering support.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implement SEO, UX, and conversion best practices directly in-page.

Own marketing site performance and improvement

  • Analyze engagement and conversion signals (scroll, clicks, drop-off, quote starts).
  • Identify and fix issues related to layout, hierarchy, CTAs, and page structure, balancing UX, SEO, and conversion goals.
  • Drive measurable improvements in conversion and engagement metrics.

Manage technical site health

  • Partner with web agency but own day‑to‑day site performance.
  • Monitor and improve:
    • Page speed
    • Core Web Vitals
    • Responsiveness
    • Template behavior
  • Troubleshoot issues with internal team before escalating to development agency.

Increase technical leverage

  • Solve simple front‑end issues using HTML, CSS, and CMS capabilities.
  • Work collaboratively with web agency to solve more complex technical and design issues and template updates.
  • Modify blocks and layouts without requiring web agency support when possible.
  • Improve page performance, structure, and usability through hands‑on changes.

Improve systems, not just pages

  • Identify ways to make page builds faster, more scalable, and more consistent.
  • Contribute to evolution of templates, components, and workflows.

What success looks like

  • Pages are shipped quickly and consistently meet quality standards.
  • Conversion and engagement metrics improve based on your changes.
  • Site issues are identified and resolved proactively.
  • The site functions at a high technical level for humans and machines.
  • Reliance on development agency decreases.
  • Page production becomes more reliable and scalable over time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Required

  • 3-5 years’ experience in hands‑on web execution roles (web ops, CMS management, digital experience).
  • Strong experience building pages in WordPress or similar CMS.
  • Practical ability to troubleshoot and fix simple front‑end issues using HTML/CSS.
  • Demonstrable understanding of UX and content hierarchy, responsive behavior, and accessibility basics.
  • Experience using analytics (GA4 or similar) to identify and act on performance issues.
  • Strong understanding of diagnostic web metrics and Core Web Vitals (CLS, LCP, INP, TTFB) and how they impact UX, SEO, and AI‑driven discovery.
  • Working knowledge of SEO/AEO execution:
    • Applying search intent to page structure
    • Implementing headings, internal linking, structured content
  • Self‑starter who can take on responsibility and achieve goals independently.
  • Strong collaborator who can communicate across technical and non‑technical teams.
  • Ability to work 4 days per week onsite in downtown Boston.

  • Experience working at or managing a web agency.
  • Familiarity with tools like GTM, Clarity, Heap, GSC.
  • Experience with CRO and experimentation.
  • Understanding of accessibility best practices and how to apply them.
  • Exposure to technical SEO and page performance optimization.
  • Experience in finance, insurance, or other regulated industries.
BHSI Offers:
  • A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates.
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and our other stakeholders.
  • A purposely non‑bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework.
  • Benefits that support your life and well‑being, which include:
  • Comprehensive Health, Dental and Vision benefits
  • Disability Insurance (both short‑term and long‑term)
  • Life Insurance (for you and your family)
