What is a web developer contract?

A Web Developer Contract is a legal agreement between a client and a web developer outlining the terms, responsibilities, deliverables, timeline, and payment for web development services. This contract protects both parties by clearly defining the scope of work, deadlines, and any intellectual property rights. It typically covers specifics such as website functionality, design, maintenance, and post-launch support. Having a contract helps to prevent misunderstandings and ensures that both the client and developer are aligned on expectations.

What are web developer contract jobs?

Web developer contract jobs involve the design or development of websites. In these positions, you work on different projects on a contract or freelance basis. Your duties depend on the type of development projects on which you work. As a front-end web developer, you work on the user interface, and your responsibilities focus on creating the visual and interactive elements of a web page or application. As a back-end developer, you may use SQL, PHP, or other languages to perform server-side development and connect the website to a database.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer contractor?

To thrive as a Web Developer Contractor, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant frameworks, supported by a portfolio of completed projects. Familiarity with version control systems such as Git, content management systems (CMS), and sometimes certifications like AWS Certified Developer can be valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective client communication are standout soft skills for this role. These capabilities are essential to deliver high-quality web solutions efficiently, meet client expectations, and adapt to diverse project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by web developers working on a contract basis, and how can they be managed?

Contract web developers often encounter challenges such as rapidly adapting to new codebases, aligning with different teams' workflows, and managing client expectations within tight deadlines. Effectively communicating with stakeholders, clarifying project requirements early, and staying organized with project management tools can help mitigate these challenges. Additionally, being proactive in seeking feedback and documenting work thoroughly ensures smoother collaboration and successful project delivery.

Job description

About Polymarket
Polymarket is the world's largest prediction market platform. We enable individuals to express views on real-world events by trading on outcomes across politics, economics, sports, culture, and current affairs. Built as a peer-to-peer marketplace with no centralized "house," Polymarket aggregates diverse opinions into transparent, market-based probabilities that reflect collective expectations about the future.
We're growing fast - both in terms of volume ($21B traded in 2025) and adoption as an alternative news source. Our ambition is to become a ubiquitous beacon of truth in global media and we need your help adding fuel to the fire.
About the Role
Polymarket is launching perpetual futures and we're looking for a Senior Web Engineer to own the frontend of our perps product. You'll build the trading interfaces that traders will rely on every day: order entry, position management, real-time market data, and the full suite of UI that makes a great perps exchange feel fast, reliable, and intuitive.
This is a high-ownership role at the intersection of frontend product development, backend systems, performance, and reliability. We want someone who has shipped trading UIs before, understands the domain deeply, and can move fast without compromising quality.
What You'll Do
  • Own and ship complex trading UI features end-to-end - order books, position panels, trade history, funding rates, liquidation displays, and more - making thoughtful tradeoffs between speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
  • Work closely with backend engineers to design APIs, reason through real-time data flows, and build reliable trading experiences on top of complex exchange systems
  • Partner with QA, TPM, product, and design to clarify requirements, manage launches, and improve product quality
  • Monitor dashboards, alerts, and user reports to identify and respond to issues quickly; work with backend and infrastructure teams during incidents to isolate root causes and follow through with fixes
  • Design and implement UI that handles live market data, streaming order books, and fast-moving prices in a way that feels responsive and accurate to traders
  • Build and improve the logs, metrics, alerts, dashboards, and error reporting that give the team visibility into frontend system performance
  • Identify meaningful technical debt, propose pragmatic refactors, and contribute to system design discussions that evolve our frontend architecture as the product scales
What We're Looking For
  • 3-5+ years of frontend web engineering experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with React, Next.js, TypeScript, and modern frontend development
  • Experience building trading, exchange, or financial product UIs - you understand the domain and know what a great trading interface requires
  • Strong frontend system design instincts across state management, data fetching, caching, performance, reliability, and maintainability
  • Experience working with real-time data: WebSockets, streaming APIs, or live market feeds
  • Strong debugging skills and experience responding to production issues
  • Comfortable working with backend engineers on APIs, data contracts, failure modes, and system behavior
  • High agency - you notice problems, propose solutions, and drive work to completion
  • Clear communicator during planning, launches, bugs, and incidents
  • (Plus) Direct experience building UI for a perpetuals exchange or derivatives trading product
  • (Plus) Frontend performance specialization, particularly around real-time data rendering
  • (Plus) Experience in crypto, Web3, or adjacent financial infrastructure
  • (Plus) Experience improving frontend observability, alerting, or reliability practices
  • (Plus) Strong practical use of AI tools to improve engineering productivity
Benefits
  • Competitive salary & equity
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Full Health, Vision, & Dental coverage
  • 401k match
  • Hardware setup: new MacBook Pro, big display, & accessories
