As a Software Development Engineer III, you will analyze, design, code, test, maintain, debug, and modify software, applications, packaged applications, and systems for local, networked, web, mobile or cloud-based technologies generally in an agile team environment.

The ideal candidate possesses strong expertise in full-stack web development, middleware/API development, cloud-native architectures, and modern AI-assisted software engineering practices.

This is a hybrid role located on our campus in Mountlake Terrace, Washington.

What you’ll do:
  • Consult with business partners and IT leaders to assist in identifying and understanding problems or improvement opportunities and recommend appropriate technologies, software, and system solutions that scale and perform.
  • Consider a system-wide, architectural view of solutions.
  • Analyze moderate to high-risk business needs to determine solutions.
  • Design solutions on various platforms by studying requirements and information needs and recommending solution alternatives.
  • Use a variety of system design techniques including prototype, proof of concept, and reference implementation.
  • Design solutions that consider cross-system integration and dependencies.
  • Develop and modify code and system set-up based on program specifications using multiple programming languages or system platforms.
  • Apply CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment).
  • Constantly improve systems.
  • Provide technical advice and support to other staff members.
  • Perform testing using both unit testing test automation and document test results.
  • Participate in testing associated with cross-functional project team efforts.
  • Produce appropriate technical documentation and notifications for changes to production systems or fixes to production problems.
  • Create SDLC (Software Development Lifecycle) artifacts.
  • Analyze moderate to high-risk production problems, assess alternatives, and work with team to implement solutions.
  • Includes performance tuning, technical troubleshooting, debugging, call-rotation, and root cause analysis.
  • Support project initiatives collaborating with the rest of the design team and stakeholders, ensuring that development milestones and deadlines are met.
  • Provide feedback on peer designs in an open and collaborative environment.
  • Act as technical resource for team and share knowledge across Premera’s developer community.
  • Collaborate with relevant personnel across Premera.
  • May mentor or advise less experienced staff.
  • Provide input to standardization of IT processes and ensure application of IT standard processes and requirements.
  • Apply engineering best practices.
  • Participate in educational opportunities to build new and additional skills and maintain technical knowledge staying current with trends and opportunities in the field, and share knowledge gained with teammates.
What you’ll bring:
  • Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • (5) years of software development experience, knowledge of software development lifecycle, and skills to utilize one or more programming languages.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with cloud solutions.
  • Experience in the healthcare industry or another highly regulated environment.
  • Previous experience in an agile environment.
  • Exposure to API and service-based technologies.
  • Experience using and creating automated test tools.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience leveraging AI coding assistants and prompt engineering in software development workflows.
  • Exposure to enterprise systems, customer-facing portals, or large-scale integration platforms.

The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience. The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range. National Plus Salary Range: $111,900.00 - $190,200.00 *National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
