About the Role

We build everything ourselvesโ€”no off-the-shelf compromises. Our systems run our storefront, our warehouse, and our business, and they're designed exactly the way we want them. We're looking for an experienced IT Manager who combines deep technical expertise with proven people management skills to help lead that effort.

ResponsibilitiesTechnical Leadership
  • Participate in architecture decisions and drive the continuous improvement of our technology stack.
  • Manage and mentor a small technical team, providing guidance, code review, and professional development.
  • Collaborate directly with stakeholders across the business to understand requirements and deliver solutions that exceed expectations.
  • Develop and enforce IT policies, security best practices, and cybersecurity standards.
Handsโ€‘On Development
  • Build sophisticated web applications using the Kendo UI JavaScript framework with complex data grids, forms, and interactive dashboards.
  • Oversee backend services using Perl/Mojolicious and PostgREST, ensuring robust API development and system reliability.
  • Design and optimize a complex PostgreSQL database (15+ schemas) with extensive use of triggers, functions, updatable views, and stored procedures.
  • Participate in the design, development, and maintenance of our complete eโ€‘commerce platform, including customerโ€‘facing storefronts, warehouse management systems, and internal business operations tools.
Operations & Administration
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of our IT infrastructure, including macOS servers, deployment automation, monitoring, and performance optimization.
  • Manage vendor relationships, hardware procurement, and software licensing.
  • Ensure system uptime, backup/recovery procedures, and disaster preparedness.
QualificationsRequired:
  • 10+ years of professional experience developing production web applications.
  • 3+ years of management or leadership experience leading technical teams.
  • Strong proficiency in JavaScript/jQuery and experience with modern UI frameworks.
  • Experience with backend development in any language (Perl knowledge a plus, but we value strong fundamentals and the ability to learn).
  • Solid understanding of relational databases, SQL, and database design principles.
  • Experience with REST APIs, JSON, and web service integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to own features end-to-end, from database to UI.
  • macOS or Linux/Unix system administration experience.
  • Strong problemโ€‘solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.

Desirable:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Experience with mobile first UI design patterns and responsive web design.

  • Experience with PostgreSQL advanced features (triggers, functions, views, window functions, CTEs, JSON, etc).
  • Familiarity with the Mojolicious or similar MVC web frameworks.
