Essential Job Duties
Reporting to the Director of Campus Enterprises Information Technology, the CMS Content Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the content management platform layer across the division's web presence. This role owns the configuration, content structure, and publishing environment within the organization's CMS, ensuring the platform is organized, functional, and aligned with organizational standards.
The CMS Content Manager works at the platform dashboard level, partnering closely with the Web Operations Manager (who owns the underlying Azure hosting infrastructure) and content stakeholders across the division. This is a hands-on CMS administration role, not an infrastructure role. The right candidate is deeply comfortable inside a CMS environment and can manage themes or templates, extensions, users, and content workflows without requiring contracted service support for routine tasks.
Key Responsibilities
CMS Platform Administration
  • Serve as the primary administrator of the CMS dashboard environment across all division web properties.
  • Manage theme or template settings and page layout configurations to maintain design consistency.
  • Audit, install, configure, and update CMS extensions, plugins, or modules; identify conflicts and escalate to the Web Operations Manager as needed.
  • Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions within the CMS; onboard and offboard team members and contributors.
  • Coordinate CMS core, theme, and extension updates in collaboration with the Web Operations Manager, validating on a staging environment before pushing to production.

Content Structure & Publishing
  • Build and maintain pages, posts, and content templates following clear information architecture principles.
  • Manage site navigation, menu structures, page hierarchy, and internal linking.
  • Oversee the media library, enforcing naming conventions, file optimization standards, and accessibility compliance.
  • Establish and maintain content publishing workflows, ensuring timely, accurate, and on-brand content across the division.

Stores & Bookstore Digital Operations
  • Serve as the CMS point of contact for Campus Enterprises Stores, including the NC State Bookstore and affiliated retail properties, supporting the management of their web presence within the division's CMS platform.
  • Assist in the administration and content management of the Stores online web store, coordinating with Stores business stakeholders on product content, promotional pages, seasonal updates, and storefront configurations within the CMS environment.
  • Maintain CMS templates, page structures, and publishing workflows specific to Stores properties, ensuring they reflect current inventory priorities, promotions, and operational needs.
  • Coordinate with the Stores team to ensure the CMS environment supports e-commerce content requirements, including product categorization pages, promotional landing pages, and integration touchpoints with the Stores commerce platform.

Brand Alignment & Design Standards
  • Ensure all web content published across Campus Enterprises properties adheres to established design standards, including approved typography, color systems, imagery guidelines, and layout conventions.
  • Partner with the Campus Enterprises Marketing team to align web content, campaign pages, and digital communications with current brand direction and marketing priorities.
  • Coordinate with NC State University Marketing and Communications to ensure Campus Enterprises web properties maintain compliance with university-wide brand standards, including proper use of the NC State identity system.
  • Serve as a quality control checkpoint for design consistency across all CMS-managed pages, flagging deviations from brand standards and working with content contributors to remediate them.

SEO & Metadata Management
  • Own on-page SEO configuration: titles, meta descriptions, schema markup, and social sharing metadata.
  • Manage URL structure, redirects, and permalink hygiene across all properties.
  • Produce regular SEO performance reports and translate findings into content or structural improvements.

Forms, CTAs & Conversion Elements
  • Build and manage web forms using the division's form toolset.
  • Connect forms to CRM or email platforms and ensure data flows are functioning correctly.
  • Manage calls-to-action, popups, and lead capture elements across the site.

Quality & Accessibility
  • Conduct routine broken link checks, media audits, and content quality reviews.
  • Ensure newly published content meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards within the CMS environment.
  • Flag performance issues to the Web Operations Manager with clear, documented detail.

Scope Boundary: What This Role Does NOT Own
This role does not manage DNS, SSL certificates, server configuration, Azure hosting environments, deployment pipelines, or any function requiring access outside of the CMS dashboard. Those responsibilities are held by the Web Operations Manager.
Other Responsibilities
  • Model the Division's mission and values, and foster a positive, cohesive workplace and congeniality among co-workers.
  • Understand the goals and culture of the organization, and understand how employees' work activities, teamwork, and customer service impact clients. Work with your supervisor and colleagues to understand these goals and the culture.
  • Adhere to all University policies, procedures, and regulations, and Division standard operating practices and protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure Campus Enterprises' business needs are met.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant experience

Other Required Qualifications
  • Hands-on administration experience with an enterprise-grade CMS (e.g., WordPress, Drupal, Sitecore, or equivalent); platform management, not just content entry.
  • Familiarity with CMS templating systems and page layout tools. Insight of institutional brand systems and ability to apply design standards consistently across a multi-property web environment.
  • Working knowledge of on-page SEO principles and metadata management, including knowledge of CMS extension or plugin ecosystems: SEO, forms, redirects, caching.
  • Understanding of CMS user roles and permission structures.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple web properties and workflows simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical (IT) and non-technical (content and marketing) stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within staging and production CMS workflows.
  • Familiarity with GA4 or equivalent analytics tools for content performance reporting.
  • Basic HTML/CSS for minor content formatting corrections within the CMS.
  • Experience with accessibility auditing tools (WAVE, axe, or equivalent).
  • Experience supporting e-commerce or retail web content in a CMS environment.
  • Exposure to more than one CMS platform; platform adaptability is valued.
