Job Description:

Summary:

The Web Assistant supports the day-to-day communications and outreach activities for the School of Public Affairs with a focus on the school's external website: https://www.american.edu/spa/. This position provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic student who is looking to build their communications and web design portfolio, with no prior website experience required.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform basic website updates to keep the website fresh and engaging.

  • Support efforts to improve Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on the website.

  • Support efforts to ensure that web pages and videos are digitally accessible and 508 compliant.

  • Other tasks as needed to support the school's communications channels (social media, email, screens, etc.).

Competencies:

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Good writing skills.

  • Good at working within a team.

  • Ability to learn new skills, platforms, and technologies at a rapid pace.

  • Microsoft Word & Excel or Google Docs equivalents.

  • Familiarity with HTML and/or CSS a plus, but not required.

  • Familiarity with website content management systems (CMS) a plus, but not required.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • 10 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $18.40 - $20.00 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • American University student working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Previous experience working in digital communications or website development/design/management is a plus, but not required.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
