Job Description

Transportation Structures Intern is an entry-level civil engineering position supporting transportation infrastructure projects in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Working within multidisciplinary project teams, the role contributes to the assessment, inspection, documentation, and design support activities associated with bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and related structural assets.

The position is involved in infrastructure evaluation and project delivery activities spanning field inspections, technical reporting, structural analysis support, quantity calculations, cost estimating, and engineering documentation. Responsibilities include supporting asset condition assessments, maintaining inspection records, and assisting with design-related tasks across various project phases.

The ideal candidate is currently pursuing a Civil Engineering degree with an interest in structural engineering and transportation infrastructure. Exposure to bridge engineering, technical report preparation, field investigations, and engineering design processes will support success in this role. Strong organizational abilities, communication skills, and attention to detail are essential.

  • Perform OSIM inspections of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and transportation infrastructure assets to support condition assessment activities.
  • Prepare and update inspection reports and asset records within the Bridge Management System using documented field findings.
  • Support engineering design activities through quantity take-offs, cost estimating, and calculation of working days for project planning purposes.
  • Assist with preparation of structural engineering reports, technical memoranda, and design documentation.
  • Participate in field investigations and coordinate inspection-related data collection with senior engineering staff.
  • Contribute to technical reporting and engineering documentation to support project delivery and asset management requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on transportation infrastructure projects while maintaining quality and documentation standards.
  • Provide additional project support as assigned to assist with engineering, inspection, and project coordination activities.
Qualifications

Required

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Civil Engineering.
  • Demonstrated interest in Structural Engineering and transportation infrastructure.
  • 0–1 years of experience (internship, co-op, academic, or project-based exposure).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and time-management abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario Driver’s License.
  • Must be located within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and able to commute to the office and project sites as required.
  • Ability to support activities related to OSIM (Ontario Structure Inspection Manual) inspections and transportation structures documentation.

Assets

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Previous exposure to bridge, culvert, or retaining wall projects through academic, co-op, internship, or volunteer experience.
  • Familiarity with asset management systems or infrastructure inspection databases.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, engineering memoranda, or design documentation.
  • Exposure to transportation infrastructure design and rehabilitation projects.
  • Understanding of engineering quantity take-offs and construction cost estimating principles.
