Can you be a meteorologist with an engineering degree?

A weather mechanical engineer typically has an engineering background focused on systems and equipment, while a meteorologist usually holds a degree in atmospheric sciences or meteorology. Transitioning between these roles may require additional training or certification in meteorology, but an engineering degree alone does not qualify someone as a meteorologist. Both careers involve understanding weather phenomena, but they require different specialized knowledge and skills.

  • Solid understanding of piping systems include process liquids, steam and condensate, compressed air, chilled and heating water, plumbing systems, waste and vent, storm water, and more. In addition, solid understanding of HVAC equipment selection, duct design, DX piping design, and hydronics
  • Conduct project building and energy code compliance analysis, heat load, and pressure drop calculations
  • Develop project specifications and select all related equipment such as boilers, chillers, heat exchangers, valves, instrumentation, and other compatible materials
  • Communicate with vendors for accurate component selection and pricing when necessary
  • Create detailed drawings, technical specifications, and cost-effective proposals
  • Perform field surveys and construction site visits to ensure installation complies with drawings
  • Attend design meetings with clients and partners, along with pre-construction and post-construction meetings
  • Manage multiple projects varying in scope, simultaneously
  • Share information with Project Management, Procurement, and all other trade disciplines
  • Construct small-scale project cost estimates as necessary
  • Display proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Licensed, professional engineer with approximately 4-5 years' experience in construction or other related fields
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, construction, or other related engineering fields
  • Duct and piping fabrication/installation experience is preferred, not required
  • Driving record meets company requirements
  • Successful passing of pre-employment drug screening required

Benefits:

  • Safety boot reimbursement

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, loud noises, and more within OSHA standards when visited the jobsite. Employees may be exposed to outdoor conditions that include inclement weather such as heat, humidity, cold, wind, and dust. May be expected to carry up to 30 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, stand for long periods of time, walk for moderate-to-long distances on varying surface conditions, climb, crawl, crouch, reach, grip, push, and pull without issue.
