Watershed managers are professionals responsible for overseeing, protecting, and restoring the health of watersheds, which are land areas that drain into a common waterway. They work to maintain water quality, manage resources, and coordinate efforts among local agencies, landowners, and the public. Their duties often include monitoring water conditions, developing conservation plans, educating communities, and implementing policies to prevent pollution and flooding. Watershed managers play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable water supplies and healthy ecosystems for both people and wildlife.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a watershed manager?

To thrive as a Watershed Manager, you need expertise in environmental science, hydrology, and resource management, typically supported by a relevant degree such as environmental engineering or ecology. Familiarity with GIS software, water quality monitoring tools, and regulatory compliance systems is essential. Strong analytical thinking, stakeholder communication, and project management skills help set standout professionals apart. These skills ensure effective stewardship of water resources, compliance with regulations, and successful collaboration among diverse groups for sustainable watershed management.

What are some common challenges faced by watershed coordinators when managing community engagement initiatives?

Watershed coordinators often encounter challenges such as balancing the diverse interests of stakeholders, addressing conflicting land use priorities, and ensuring sustained community participation. Coordinating between local government agencies, landowners, and environmental groups requires strong communication and conflict-resolution skills. Building trust and maintaining engagement can be time-consuming, but it is vital for successful watershed management and long-term environmental impact.

Job description

About Watershed

Watershed is the enterprise sustainability platform. Companies like Airbnb, Carlyle Group, FedEx, Visa, and Dr. Martens use Watershed to manage climate and ESG data, produce auditโ€‘ready metrics for voluntary and regulatory reporting including CSRD, and drive real decarbonization. We are looking for team members who love productโ€‘building, want to work hard at a missionโ€‘oriented startup, and will collaborate with us in shaping the culture of a growing team.

We have offices in San Francisco, New York, Denver, London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Mexico City, and remote team members across the US and Europe. We hope that you'll be interested in joining us!

The role

Watershed is on a mission to drive meaningful climate action, and our Sustainability Data Advisory ("SDA") team plays a key role in helping customers to reach their sustainability goals and achieve real reductions. This team acts as a trusted advisor to some of the worldโ€™s largest and most influential companies, including Walmart, BlackRock, and Fedex, helping these companies to complete rigorous and actionable measurements in the Watershed platform. The work of the Sustainability Data Advisory team includes scoping measurements, supporting emissions verifications, and providing specialized advisory to help customers optimize their data and methodologies.

As a Manager on the Sustainability Data Advisory team, youโ€™ll lead a team of 8-10 advisors in the Mexico City branch of a globally distributed team. In this role, you will enable your team to deliver highโ€‘quality advisory and services to Watershedโ€™s customers. In addition, youโ€™ll lead strategic initiatives that improve the quality and efficiency of the Sustainability Data Advisory team. This includesโ€” but is not limited to โ€” integrating AI into the teamโ€™s workflows.

This is a unique opportunity to be an early leader within Watershedโ€™s Mexico City office. As a key leader in this new office, youโ€™ll play a critical role in building an inclusive, supportive, and highโ€‘performance culture, not only for your team, but for the broader Mexico City office as a whole.

In this role, you willโ€ฆ

  • Lead and scale a high-performing team. Youโ€™ll coach and develop a talented team of 8-10 advisors as part of a 30-person global team.

  • Ensure the team delivers high-quality services to Watershedโ€™s customers, bringing rigor and expertise to every customer interaction.

  • Drive day-to-day team operations, helping the team prioritize work, manage escalations, and remove blockers.

  • Drive operational excellence. Youโ€™ll shape operational systems and lead initiatives to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of delivery.

  • Shape Sustainability Data Advisory strategy. Youโ€™ll partner with other managers and leaders to help guide the strategic direction of the Sustainability Data Advisory team as we scale our business.

  • Foster cross-functional collaboration. Youโ€™ll represent your team in conversations with Watershedโ€™s Customer Success, Support, Product, and Methodology leadership, working collaboratively to align strategies and execution.

  • Be an early leader in our Mexico City office. You will embody and champion Watershedโ€™s operating principles, setting the tone for an inclusive, missionโ€‘driven, and high-performance team.

Youโ€™re a great fit for this role ifโ€ฆ

  • You bring 10+ years of professional experience, including 3+ years of demonstrated success managing customerโ€‘facing teams of 6+ people, typically in a consulting environment or within B2B SaaS.

  • Youโ€™re a skilled manager who is motivated by coaching, hiring, and developing high-performing teams.

  • You are customerโ€‘obsessed. You know how to set a high bar for quality customer delivery and help your teams to reach that bar.

  • You're a strong operator who loves to get into the details, uses data to make decisions, and builds repeatable systems in high-growth environments.

  • You have experience leveraging AI to drive efficiency and amplify customer impact.

  • Youโ€™re a strong written and verbal communicator, able to clearly articulate a vision, build trust within your team, and influence crossโ€‘functional peers.

  • You thrive in a highโ€‘growth, fastโ€‘paced environment; you bring an ownership mentality, curiosity, and a bias to action in everything that you do.

  • You are passionate about solving climate change. Ideally, you also bring expertise in carbon accounting and sustainabilityโ€‘related topics, built through direct experience in the field.

  • You are fluent in written and verbal English.

Must be willing to work from an office 4 days per week (except for remote roles)
