What are the most common challenges faced by waterproofing professionals on construction sites?

Waterproofing professionals often encounter challenges such as working in tight or hard-to-reach spaces, managing weather-related delays, and ensuring surfaces are properly prepared before application. Coordination with other trades is crucial, as waterproofing tasks often depend on the schedule and completion of other construction activities. Staying updated with the latest materials and application techniques is also important to meet safety standards and achieve long-lasting results.

What is a waterproofing job?

Waterproofing jobs are available in commercial and residential construction industries. Construction, roofing, general contracting, and masonry companies hire waterproofers for a range of building site tasks. As a waterproofer, you apply caulking, sealants, and coatings to roofing and structural joints to prevent water from getting through. Your responsibilities include determining the appropriate materials and processes to repair and waterproof a roof, ensuring clean and proper application of caulking and other compounds, and following company guidelines to complete each task. Job duties involve climbing up and down ladders, navigating difficult terrain while at high elevation, and working in all weather conditions to meet deadlines.

What is waterproofing and why is it important?

Waterproofing is the process of making a structure or surface resistant to water penetration. It is crucial for protecting buildings, basements, roofs, and other structures from water damage, which can lead to mold growth, structural deterioration, and costly repairs. Effective waterproofing extends the lifespan of buildings and maintains a healthy indoor environment by preventing leaks and moisture buildup.

Waterproofing involves planning, designing, and overseeing waterproofing projects, often requiring certifications and a broader understanding of building systems. Waterproofing installers focus on the hands-on application of waterproofing materials on-site, ensuring proper installation according to specifications. Both roles are essential in construction and maintenance, but they differ in responsibilities and required skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a waterproofing specialist?

To thrive as a Waterproofing Specialist, you need a solid understanding of construction practices, building materials, and safety procedures, often supported by on-the-job training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with waterproofing systems, sealants, membranes, and tools like moisture meters is important, and certifications such as those from the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help ensure quality work and smooth collaboration with clients and other trades. These competencies are crucial to prevent water damage, uphold structural integrity, and deliver reliable, long-lasting results.

Job description

About Us

Jerry's Waterproofing is a growing, locally owned home services company in the Omaha metro area, specializing in basement waterproofing, egress windows, radon mitigation, and foundation repair. As we scale our team, we're looking for an HR Generalist who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and enjoys building HR processes from the ground up rather than just maintaining what's already there.

About the Role

This is a hands-on, do-it-all HR role for a company with fewer than 50 employees. You'll own the full employee lifecycle — from recruiting and onboarding through performance management, benefits coordination, and workplace issue resolution. You'll work closely with leadership to build the HR infrastructure that supports our growth.

What You'll Do

  • Manage full-cycle recruiting: sourcing, screening, interviewing, and onboarding a steady pipeline of quality candidates across field and office roles
  • Draft and maintain accurate, up-to-date job descriptions as roles evolve
  • Serve as the point of contact between employees and third-party benefits providers, resolving coverage and enrollment questions
  • Handle workers' compensation claims and issues from initial report through resolution
  • Build and deliver training content for new hires and for employees pursuing career development/advancement
  • Administer the performance review process, including scheduling, documentation, and manager support
  • Provide coaching and guidance to managers handling disciplinary action situations, ensuring consistency and compliance
  • Support day-to-day HR operations and act as a trusted resource for employees at all levels

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience as an HR Generalist, HR Coordinator, or similar role
  • Experience in a small business, startup, or entrepreneurial/growth-stage environment strongly preferred
  • Track record of successfully recruiting, screening, interviewing, and onboarding candidates on a consistent basis
  • Working knowledge of workers' compensation processes and benefits administration
  • Experience drafting job descriptions and building training/development content
  • Comfortable coaching managers through performance and disciplinary conversations
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities independently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Having and HR degree or PHR/SHRM-CP certifications is a plus

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary, based on experience
  • Health insurance, SIMPLE IRA w/ match, PTO, etc.
  • Opportunity to shape HR practices at a growing, locally owned company
  • Direct access to leadership and a real seat at the table as the business scales

Join us to be part of an energetic team dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace where every employee can thrive! We value proactive individuals who are passionate about shaping positive organizational cultures through strategic human resources practices.

Company Description

We are celebrating our 50th year in business as a growing home services company serving the Omaha metro area with basement waterproofing, egress windows, radon mitigation, and foundation repair.
