Waterproofing Engineer information

What does a waterproofing engineer do?

A Waterproofing Engineer specializes in designing and implementing systems that prevent water from penetrating buildings, structures, or materials. They assess sites, select appropriate waterproofing methods, and oversee installation to ensure durability and compliance with regulations. These professionals work on projects such as basements, roofs, tunnels, and bridges, helping to protect structures from water damage, mold growth, and structural deterioration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a waterproofing engineer?

To thrive as a Waterproofing Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, knowledge of construction materials, and a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software, waterproofing systems, and building codes is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the design and implementation of effective waterproofing solutions that protect structures from water damage and extend their lifespan.

What are common challenges faced by waterproofing engineers on construction projects?

Waterproofing Engineers often encounter challenges such as working around tight construction schedules, coordinating with multiple trades to ensure proper sequencing of waterproofing applications, and adapting to site-specific conditions like varying substrates or unexpected weather. Addressing these issues requires strong communication skills and meticulous attention to detail to ensure long-lasting, effective waterproofing systems. Staying updated on new materials and techniques is also crucial, as building codes and product offerings evolve regularly.

What We Are Looking For

  • 3+ years of project management experience in commercial waterproofing, roofing, building envelope, or specialty construction
  • Strong knowledge of waterproofing details, sequencing, and common failure points
  • Ability to read and apply construction drawings, specifications, and project documents
  • Proficiency with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Procore) and Microsoft Office
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently under tight deadlines
  • Comfortable working at heights and using ladders/elevated access equipment
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening

Preferred Skills & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with major waterproofing manufacturers (Henry, Tremco, Sika, Carlisle, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Procore, DataForma, or similar construction software
