What is the difference between Water Wastewater Process Engineer vs Water Treatment Plant Operator?

AspectWater Wastewater Process Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or related field; professional engineering license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign, analyze, and optimize water and wastewater treatment processes in engineering firms or industrial settings
Employer & IndustryEngineering consulting firms, municipal agencies, industrial plants
Job FocusProcess design, system optimization, troubleshooting, and compliance with environmental regulations

While Water Wastewater Process Engineers focus on designing and improving treatment systems through technical analysis and engineering principles, Water Treatment Plant Operators handle the day-to-day operation and maintenance of treatment facilities. Engineers typically work in office or lab settings, whereas operators work on-site at treatment plants. Both roles are essential in ensuring safe and compliant water treatment processes, but they differ in responsibilities, qualifications, and work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Water Wastewater Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Water Wastewater Process Engineer, you need a solid background in environmental or chemical engineering, with expertise in water and wastewater treatment processes, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and, often, Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, process modeling tools, SCADA systems, and regulatory compliance standards is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills ensure the efficient design, optimization, and operation of treatment systems, safeguarding public health and environmental standards.

What are some common challenges Water Wastewater Process Engineers face when managing treatment plant upgrades?

Water Wastewater Process Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, ensuring compliance with evolving environmental regulations, and minimizing plant downtime during upgrades. Managing these projects requires strong communication skills to collaborate with operations staff, contractors, and regulatory agencies. Additionally, engineers must balance technical feasibility with budget constraints and maintain system performance throughout the transition.

What does a Water Wastewater Process Engineer do?

A Water Wastewater Process Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes processes for treating water and wastewater in municipal or industrial facilities. They ensure that water treatment systems operate efficiently, meet regulatory standards, and protect public health and the environment. Their work often involves evaluating treatment technologies, troubleshooting operational issues, and implementing improvements to reduce costs and enhance performance.

Job description

ABOUT YOU

BlueWTR is hiring a Senior Process Engineer/Design PM to lead process design and technical delivery on industrial water and wastewater projects across hyperscale data center, RNG/biogas, semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, and food & beverage markets. You'll own basis-of-design through commissioning on projects ranging from greenfield UPW systems to multi-hundred-MW cooling and reuse infrastructure, working inside a design-build structure with the full backing of ARCO/Murray's national platform.

This is a senior, client-facing role with ownership over process scope, deliverables, and technical decisions.

  • Location: Denver or Chicago
  • Travel: 10-20% domestically

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

Expected compensation range: $135K - $175K + Bonus.  This is an approximate range; actual salary may be higher or lower depending on your experience and skillset.

  • Industry-leading performance-based bonus program
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • HSA and FSA options
  • Paid parental leave
  • Paid sabbatical and volunteer leave
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Up to $28,000 in scholarships per child
  • 100% charitable match
  • Inclusive, ownership-driven workplace culture

A DAY IN THE LIFE
  • Lead process design on assigned industrial water and wastewater projects; membrane (UF/NF/RO), biological, chemical, solids handling, and reuse, from FEL through commissioning.
  • Own basis-of-design, mass balances, hydraulic profiles, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, and control narratives as primary author and approver.
  • Serve as the senior technical interface for clients, consulting engineers, and design-build partners; defend process decisions and translate them into executable scope.
  • Drive equipment selection, OEM evaluations, technical procurement, and submittal reviews.
  • Direct startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization in coordination with controls integrators and field teams.
  • Mentor junior engineers and review their deliverables; raise the technical bar across the process group.
  • Support business development through proposal input, scoping calls, and regional presence at industry events.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
  • 7–10 years in industrial water/wastewater process engineering or design-build process delivery.
  • Demonstrated ownership of PFDs, P&IDs, hydraulic profiles, mass balances, and basis-of-design packages on completed projects.
  • Hands-on experience with membrane systems (UF/NF/RO), biological treatment, chemical feed, and solids handling.
  • Strong client-facing communication; able to lead technical discussions with sophisticated industrial owners and their reps.
  • Experience inside design-build or EPC delivery, comfortable with cost, schedule, and constructability pressure on process decisions.
  • BS in Chemical, Environmental, or related engineering discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PE license.
  • Direct project experience in hyperscale data center cooling, RNG/biogas, semiconductor UPW, or food & beverage process water.
  • Working knowledge of industrial controls, PLC/SCADA architecture, instrumentation, and process automation handoffs.
  • NPDES permitting and industrial discharge compliance experience.
  • Prior experience mentoring or formally managing other engineers.
