Orange County Utilities (OCU) provides water resources and solid waste recovery services to protect and enrich the lives of the citizens and guests of Orange County Florida. The Water Division ensures a safe and reliable water supply for all of Orange County Utilitiesยฟ customers. The Water Division operates four regional facilities and eight satellite facilities that collectively produce approximately 60 million gallons of drinking water per day.
The Water Division is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of ยฟProfessional On-Callยฟ in the Organics section of the laboratory. This position is responsible for sample preparation and analysis of volatile and/or semi-volatile organic contaminants by approved EPA or Standard Method procedures. Work is performed with considerable independence and the exercise of independent judgment under the general supervision of the department manager or other designated supervisor.
Job Description
Representative Duties
  • Performs a full range of duties characteristic of an environmental analytical laboratory, including but not limited to extracting and analyzing Organics samples, preparing reagents and maintaining appropriate and sufficient supplies to perform analyses.
  • Assist with research and method development for solid phase and microextraction procedures as well as instrumental analysis utilizing GCMS SIM or Triple Quadrupole analysis.
  • Coaching/training junior staff members using personal experience and knowledge of instrumentation and analytical processes.
  • Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Posting data in LIMS and reviewing results to ensure Quality Assurance compliance.
  • Participating in duties related to the cleanliness of the workspace; glassware washing, disposal of samples, digests, and extracts, etc.
  • Develops and revises standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Assists in report writing, data handling and other office tasks as directed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a closely related science field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience may be substituted for formal education, provided the experience is related to Chemist work in laboratory.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
Preferences
  • Experience with volatile/semi-volatile Organics analysis using gas or liquid chromatography instrumentation (GC, GCMS, HPLC, LCMS, etc.)
  • Experience with Organics sample extraction procedures.
  • Working knowledge of EPA and Standard Methods drinking and wastewater methods (500, 600 and 8000 series methods).
  • Experience in chemical analysis work in a NELAP certified environmental laboratory.
  • Computer experience, including working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing programs.
  • Experience with analytical equipment and laboratory record keeping.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS)
