Ranch Assistant
Reports to: Ranch Director
Status: Part Time, Hourly
Salary: $17.00-$18.00/hour
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The mission of Scouting America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
This position supports the mission and operations of Scouting America, Orange County Council and the Ed Laird Scout Camp at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center. The ranch assistant is responsible for supporting the fruit orchard, garden, fishpond, and any potential expansions to what is considered the "ranch."
REQUIREMENTS
  • Able to work outdoors for most of the day doing physically demanding tasks
  • Able to create and follow crop plans
  • Experience with pruning, fertilizing, and irrigation
  • Knowledge and experience in organic growing practices and soil regeneration

JOB DUTIES
  • Maintaining fruit orchard and garden
  • Perform regular maintenance and manual labor including planting, thinning, pruning, irrigation/watering, fertilizing, propagating, weeding, soil amending, mulching, Integrated Pest Management, etc. with consideration for wildlife and guests.
  • Safely use tools and machinery such as trimmers, saws, loppers, woodchipper, gator, tractor, etc. as needed
  • Must be able to spend most work hours outdoors in the orchard, garden, and other ranch areas doing physically demanding tasks such as invasive plant removal
  • Complete regular inspections and maintenance of program equipment and facilities.
  • Maintain and uphold facility standard operating procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Must be able to spend significant time outdoors
  • Ability to lift, carry, and balance 50 pounds.
  • Ability to exert on a regular basis 50 pounds of force
  • Constantly able to bend and scoop, sit, and stand, possess hand-eye-foot coordination, and perform good manual dexterity
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand for extended periods.
  • This position requires the employee to work outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions as well as dust, pollen, plant life, insects, and wildlife.

Working in a camp environment includes providing customer service, solving problems, and cooperation with others, regardless of your title. It also requires a desire to develop and work with youth, which can occasionally lead to challenging interactions.
