What are some common challenges faced by Watch Officers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Watch Officers often encounter challenges such as maintaining situational awareness during long shifts, handling multiple incidents simultaneously, and ensuring clear communication among team members and stakeholders. To manage these effectively, it is crucial to follow established protocols, utilize checklists, and prioritize tasks based on urgency. Regular training, strong teamwork, and effective use of monitoring tools can also help Watch Officers stay organized and responsive during high-pressure situations.

What are Watch Officers?

Watch Officers are professionals responsible for overseeing and managing operations during a specific shift or 'watch' period, often in maritime, military, emergency response, or security settings. Their duties typically include monitoring activities, coordinating communication, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and responding to incidents as needed. Watch Officers play a critical role in maintaining situational awareness and facilitating smooth transitions between shifts. They must be detail-oriented, able to make quick decisions, and possess strong leadership skills. The role may vary depending on the industry, but the core responsibility is to ensure operations run efficiently and safely during their watch.

What is the difference between Watch Officer vs Marine Safety Officer?

AspectWatch OfficerMarine Safety Officer
CredentialsSTCW certifications, maritime trainingMaritime safety certifications, regulatory training
Work EnvironmentShip bridge, maritime operationsPorts, maritime safety agencies, regulatory bodies
Employer & IndustryShipping companies, maritime vesselsGovernment agencies, maritime safety organizations
Search & ComparisonOften searched together due to maritime safety rolesRelated but more regulatory-focused

While both roles involve maritime safety, a Watch Officer primarily oversees navigation and vessel operations onboard ships, requiring maritime certifications. A Marine Safety Officer works in safety regulation, inspections, and compliance within maritime agencies or ports. Understanding these differences helps job seekers identify the right career path in the maritime industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Watch Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Watch Officer, you need a solid understanding of navigation, maritime safety regulations, and vessel operations, typically supported by a maritime academy degree and Officer of the Watch (OOW) certification. Familiarity with navigation systems, radar, ECDIS, and communication equipment is integral to the role. Strong situational awareness, decision-making, and leadership skills help manage crew and respond effectively to emergencies. These skills ensure safe vessel operations, regulatory compliance, and effective response to dynamic maritime situations.

Job description

Company Description

Founded in 1989, SOSi is among the largest private, founder-owned technology and services integrators in the defense and government services industry. We deliver tailored solutions, tested leadership, and trusted results to enable national security missions worldwide.

Job Description

This is where real-time decisions drive real-world impact.

SOSi is seeking aย Watch Officer Lead to take charge of mission visibility at Camp H.M. Smith-owning the operational picture across MAVEN Smart System (MSS), SolarWinds, and enterprise dashboards.

You won't just monitor systems-you'll lead situational awareness, drive outage coordination, and ensure senior leaders have the clarity they need to act. From tracking Priority tickets to translating complex network disruptions into actionable insights, you'll sit at the center of mission execution-where speed, accuracy, and leadership matter most.

At SOSi, we tackle complex technical challenges head-on-because Challenge Accepted isn't just a motto, it's how we operate.

Essential Job Duties

  • Serve as the senior operational lead for MAVEN Smart System (MSS) and SolarWinds dashboard ownership, reporting, accuracy, and operational usefulness.
  • Operate as a peer lead to the DCO Lead and report directly to the INSOC Lead.
  • Lead the tracking, coordination, and reporting of Priority tickets, major network outages, system outages, service degradations, and mission-impacting infrastructure events.
  • Maintain real-time situational awareness of affected services, users, locations, circuits, systems, applications, mission partners, outage status, and estimated restoration timelines.
  • Validate MSS and SolarWinds dashboard information against ticket updates, outage calls, service owner inputs, and operational reporting channels.
  • Identify and correct gaps in dashboard visibility, stale data, missing service mappings, inaccurate status indicators, and unclear outage reporting.
  • Coordinate with TNCC Watch, NetOps, SysOps, engineering teams, service owners, help desk, and mission stakeholders to confirm outage status, operational impact, ownership, and restoration timelines.
  • Report dashboard-driven operational information to TNCC Watch, Government leadership, and General Officer-level audiences.
  • Translate dashboard data, ticket information, and technical updates into clear operational impact statements for senior leadership.
  • Ensure Priority tickets and major outage records include accurate timelines, impact statements, troubleshooting updates, assigned owners, escalation actions, and closure notes.
  • Lead the tracking of open issues, unresolved outages, pending escalations, leadership-directed follow-ups, and restoration actions through completion.
  • Prepare and deliver outage updates, significant activity summaries, shift turnovers, executive summaries, and GO-level operational reporting.
  • Lead outage calls, technical bridges, operational synchronization meetings, shift handovers, and leadership update briefs as required.
  • Establish dashboard review procedures, reporting standards, escalation triggers, and turnover expectations for MSS, SolarWinds, and related operational tools.
  • Recommend improvements to MSS and SolarWinds dashboards to better support command visibility, outage tracking, service health reporting, and senior-leader decision-making.
  • Train and mentor watch personnel on the proper use of MSS, SolarWinds, ticketing systems, watch logs, outage reporting, and escalation procedures.
  • Support the development and refinement of watch floor SOPs, dashboard reporting procedures, escalation processes, shift turnover standards, and outage reporting templates.
  • Maintain operational awareness across enterprise network, infrastructure, systems, applications, and mission service environments.

  • Ability to remain calm under pressure while managing multiple high-priority operational issues.
  • Willingness to learn and take ownership of MSS, SolarWinds, command-specific dashboards, and local reporting procedures.
