The Opportunity

As a Water Utilities Operator, you will be responsible for the general operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment sites and Distribution Systems and customer service for the InnServices, as well as ensuring

compliance with Provincial Legislation and Town policies for the protection of public health and safety.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Operates and maintains all InnServices owned water treatment systems in order to control production and water quality to the public users and the environment.
  • Performs daily rounds of treatment facilities for the analysis, monitoring and recording of: chemical usage and replenishing of supplies; daily production of supply volumes and operational hours; reservoir levels, generator status, system pressures; operational parameters as dictated by Ministry of Environment Certificates of Approval and regulations
  • Performs flushing/repairs and inspections to existing water mains, hydrants, valves, services as required. Performs required preventative maintenance on all distribution system appurtenances as required.
  • Ensures all wells, filtration plant equipment, reservoirs, pumps, standpipes and diesel generators are maintained in good operational condition. Test and ensure diesel generators are operational when required.
  • Performs utility locates of distribution system piping as required, utilizing engineering drawings, digital drawings and electronic locating equipment, as required by internal/outside agencies, in order to avoid damage to existing underground plant or service disruption. Performs site inspections of new and existing equipment in the distribution systems, pump stations and plant.
  • Is a proactive and engaged member of the Water Services team. Makes and lives up to commitments and follows up with team members to ensure satisfaction of commitments made to others.
  • Maintains effective and co-operative liaison, and exchanges information, with other staff, municipalities, government agencies, other organizations, members of the public, etc.; deals with all contacts in a courteous, friendly and efficient manner to promote a high standard of customer service and public relations at all times; responds to customer complaints as assigned.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and tools in good operating condition. Maintains all other departmental equipment in good working order.
  • Requires mandatory participation in overtime and on-call after hours, weekend work and stat holidays as required.
  • Acts in the absence of the (ORO) Operator in Overall Responsibility/Supervisor when requested and as required.
  • Participates in training courses, seminars and or workshops deemed necessary to qualify for operating licenses.

Qualifications & Core Capabilities:

  • Community College diploma in a related field (such as; Civil Engineering, Water, Water, or Environmental studies) or equivalent related experience.
  • Water meter installer’s license or equivalent plumber’s license, as issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a water distribution and water treatment environment. MECP Class І (1) Certification required in Water Treatment and MECP Class І (1) Water Distribution and Supply Subsystem.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), MECP Regulations and Operating Guidelines plus any other legislation relevant to the duties.
  • Computer literacy utilizing word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software, SCADA, GIS Mapping, Programmable Logic Controls and the Internet.
  • Excellent interpersonal, project/time management, analytical, communication, presentation, public/media relations and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, be detailed oriented and accurate; ability to gather, analyze and present data.
  • Ability to interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and contacts in a Customer Service focused environment; build cooperative, collaborative working relationships with internal and external customers. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business, DZ License preferred.
  • Availability to attend evening meetings or other events, if necessary.
