General Statement of Duties The City of Eugene Wastewater Division is looking to hire a Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic 1 / 2 to join their team. OPEN UNTIL FILLED. Next review of applications: Friday, July 24, 2026 - 5:00 p.m
PDT. Accepting Online Applications Only Information on How to Apply The Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic performs journey-level equipment maintenance with minimal instruction and supervision; responsible for a variety of mechanical duties in a large complex activated sludge wastewater treatment plant and related off- site facilities. This position will require areas of specialization such as welding and fabrication, pump repair, industrial engine maintenance, or other specialized skills listed below.
If you would like a tour of the treatment plant please call the hiring supervisor, Josh Haring @ 541-543-7677 or 541 682-8606. As a part of the interview process there is a panel interview and a skills test in the maintenance shop. During the skills test you will be using a cutting torch and an arc welder and hand tools.
Appropriate clothing will be required, steel-toed shoes must be worn, or you will not be allowed to proceed with the skills testing. Other PPE will be provided and must be worn, (face shield while grinding, shop coat while welding) there are no exceptions. This position requires a competent and seasoned professional in all phases of industrial plant maintenance; required to work overtime on an assigned and callout basis as deemed necessary by the city during emergency situations.

River Ave, Eugene Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains pumps, centrifugal blowers, methane fired engines, generators, boilers and other specialized equipment
Direct handling of domestic and industrial sewage and sludge processing equipment. Installs, maintains, and repairs pumps, compressors, blowers, sludge processing and handling equipment, and other equipment commonly found in the wastewater industry and used in treatment and handling of sewage. Performs routine preventive equipment maintenance inspections in an industrial setting, monitors, and records equipment condition indicators.
Performs preventive maintenance lubrication on various types of large industrial equipment, valves, and gates. Performs routine and major maintenance; monitors and troubleshoots methane powered engine generator. Responsible for work orders and planning of assigned work or projects.
Makes necessary equipment adjustments and repairs as established by maintenance procedures and individual experience. May serve on committees such as the Wastewater Division Safety Committee, Environmental Management System (EMS) Team, or other active roles dealing with the business of the Wastewater Division. Assists Maintenance Supervisor and/or Maintenance Lead in scheduling work to be performed, schedules necessary equipment shutdowns in collaboration, as necessary, with other work sections.
Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Lead, may develop and/or modify mechanical maintenance procedures. Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Lead, may train others in proper maintenance techniques, equipment operation, and/or safety procedures related to maintenance and/or equipment. Will be assigned to work on special maintenance or other technical and complex projects.
Performs major, minor, and routine preventive and corrective maintenance on treatment plant, biosolids facility, pump stations, and other equipment as directed by work orders generated by various work sections and maintenance management system. Troubleshoots and isolates problems in malfunctioning equipment as assigned. Follows all manufacture's and City of Eugene safety procedures when isolating equipment, including proper equipment tagging and lock-out requirements.
Will be required to perform limited fabrication and machine work as assigned. Will be assigned to work in anaerobic digesters, wet wells, manholes, or other confined spaces containing sewage or residue using appropriate personal protective or other safety equipment. Expected to work independently, and with the supervision of a journey level mechanic using initiative and high standards of quality and productivity.
Responsible for cleaning spills of oil, sludge, and other materials found in the work area; keeping equipment neat, clean, and properly stored; may be required to perform limited custodial work. Maintains computerized and written reports and maintenance work records. Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
Performs other related duties as assigned. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic 1 or 2 License or Certificate A valid Oregon driver's license, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard.
Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355). Possession of a State of Oregon Journeyman Certificate in a work-related trade (examples of a work-related trade include millwright, maintenance mechanic, welder, light and heavy automotive mechanic, Broiler tech) or equivalent knowledge/experience. Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic 1 Experience Two years of progressive technical experience and training that provides the applicable advanced journey level knowledge and skills directly related to Wastewater and/or Industrial process equipment commonly used in the timber industry and manufacturing
Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic 2 Experience Four years of progressive technical experience and training that provides the applicable advanced journey level knowledge and skills directly related to Wastewater and/or Industrial process equipment commonly used in the timber industry and manufacturing. The Ideal Candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of: Maintenance principles and practices on machinery and equipment used in wastewater treatment or similar industries. Maintenance principles and practices of methane powered engine generators and/or industrial diesel engines.
Common industrial lubricants and lubrication systems. Common industrial maintenance safety practices. Ability to: Troubleshoot and correct mechanical problems; perform maintenance on equipment commonly found at wastewater or similar facilities.
Follow written and technically complex equipment maintenance procedures commonly found in equipment operations and maintenance manuals. Read and understand complex blueprints and piping schematics commonly found in industry. Perform work assignments in inclement weather conditions and in direct contact with sewage, sludge, or other substances commonly found in wastewater or similar industry.
Perform basic direct-coupled alignment on rotating-shaft equipment. Evaluate mechanical problems and, with minimal supervision, remedy problems using prior experience and commonly established problem-solving techniques. Lift and carry heavy objects and materials weighing up to 50 pounds safely and without assistance.
Climb and work from ladders and scaffolds using proper safety techniques. Wear the provided personal protective equipment, such as respirators, as required. Enter and work in confined spaces.
Obtain industry certifications as needed or as requested by the supervisor based on the Wastewater division's needs and requirements. You will be participating in a training program for 2 years (at least) that will consist of working equipment and projects large and small with journey level mechanics and on your own to accumulate enough hours to complete the program. You will be working closely with the lead and your supervisor to ensure you are working on the equipment and projects you need to so you can gain the hours and knowledge you need to flex to a tech 2.
