Job description

Assistant Total Waste Management Manager
The Assistant Total Waste Management Manager supports the Total Waste Management (TWM) Manager in the day-to-day administration, coordination, and continuous improvement of Total Waste Management services for an automotive manufacturing client with initial locations in Northeast Ohio and Buffalo NY. This position assists in overseeing contractor partners, supporting self-performed operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, coordinating environmental initiatives, and maintaining strong customer and vendor relationships. The Assistant Manager serves as the acting manager in the absence of the Total Waste Management Manager and plays a key role in delivering safe, efficient, and compliant environmental services in accordance with customer and regulatory requirements. The primary office location is in the Allen Park / Detroit Area.
Primary Goals and Responsibilities (include but not limited to)
Operations & Program Support
  • Assist the Total Waste Management Manager with the daily day-to-day administration of the Total Waste Management program.
  • Coordinate daily waste management operations to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.
  • Support the implementation of environmental initiatives, projects, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Monitor service levels and assist in resolving operational issues while maintaining customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as acting manager during the absence of the Total Waste Management Manager.

Environmental Compliance
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, customer, and company environmental regulations.
  • Support environmental inspections, audits, and compliance assessments.
  • Assist with hazard communication, chemical labeling, waste management, spill prevention, and storm water pollution prevention initiatives.
  • Monitor environmental documentation and ensure required records are maintained accurately.
  • Assist in reviewing environmental regulations and evaluating impacts to operations.

Vendor & Contractor Management
  • Assist in overseeing waste disposal contractors and subcontractors to ensure contractual and safety compliance.
  • Monitor contractor performance against established Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and contractual deliverables.
  • Coordinate Support vendor audits and corrective actions when deficiencies are identified.
  • Support contractor onboarding, safety orientation, and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Verify vendors complete required pre-task planning, job safety analyses, and environmental documentation.

Project Coordination
  • Assist with managing environmental and waste-related projects from planning through implementation.
  • Coordinate project schedules, contractor activities, and customer communications.
  • Assist in obtaining vendor quotations and tracking project budgets.
  • Monitor project progress and communicate status updates to leadership.

Safety & Incident Management
  • Support investigations involving environmental incidents, spills, and compliance concerns. Assist with environmental incident reporting, spill response documentation, corrective action tracking, and follow-up activities.
  • Assist with root cause analyses and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Help ensure incidents are documented, tracked, and resolved in a timely manner.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by supporting compliance with company and customer safety programs.

Customer & Team Support
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with customers, contractors, and internal operations teams.
  • Attend customer environmental meetings as requested.
  • Assist with preparing reports, presentations, and environmental performance metrics.
  • Support training for employees and contractors on environmental procedures and waste management practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and day-to-day support to site leadership regarding environmental requirements.

Qualifications & Prior Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, or a related field preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of environmental, waste management, facilities management, or manufacturing experience.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, compliance requirements, and reporting.
  • RCRA, DOT, and HAZWOPER 40 certification required but training can be provided by employer.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous and non-hazardous waste management regulations.
  • Understanding of OSHA requirements and environmental best practices.
  • Experience coordinating contractors or vendor relationships.
  • Project coordination or project management experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Financial awareness with the ability to assist in tracking budgets and vendor costs.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and standard business software.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting cross-functional teams.
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and accountability.
  • Some travel required.
