Job description

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:

The Driver for the Sanitation Division is responsible for driving large commercial front loader garbage trucks and will assist with the removal and disposal of residential and commercial refuse dumpsters. Work requires that the employee follow an established route and maintain a collection schedule.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Operate a refuse collection truck, equipped with a hydraulic packer and dump, in a safe and legal manner on an assigned route; supervise and instruct crew members in proper collection procedures to ensure that route is completed in a safe and timely manner; assists in collecting and loading operations as needed; fills out daily reports and time sheet.
  • Inspect the refuse truck daily to ensure that the vehicle is properly equipped, cleaned and serviced; perform minor maintenance; complete a vehicle inspection report and reports any needed repairs to supervisor or repair shop.
  • Report violations of solid waste collection regulations to supervisor.
  • Deal with citizens encountered on the route in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
  • Complete all scheduled garbage routes, make special pickups as scheduled.
  • Ensure proper safety precautions have been taken; sets out traffic cones; puts out barricades; flags traffic.
  • Require regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.
  • Wash and grease truck and packer; assist the leaf collection crew; work additional routes as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles of operation of packer type refuse collection trucks.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in equipment operations.
  • Knowledge of the safety precautions applicable to refuse collection.
  • Knowledge of street and address locations.
  • Ability to supervise the work of a refuse collection crew and to instruct them in rules and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinate employees, customers, and the general public.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency and experience in driving a heavy duty truck; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Environment:

Work is performed outside in adverse weather conditions and exposes the employee to wetness, gases, sharp objects, and unsanitary conditions. Work involves operating a refuse truck. Work exposes employee occasionally to potential biological and chemical hazards from household garbage, and occasionally to inclement weather. Work also exposes employee daily to traffic hazards and to potential mechanical hazards. Work requires the employee to be alert at all times. Protective equipment is required such as gloves, safety glasses, boots, hard hats, orange vests and traffic flags.

Physical:

Work requires the physical ability to lift heavy objects for sustained periods of time; stand or sit for extended periods of time in confined spaces. Work requires sitting for prolonged periods, walking, kneeling, stooping, grasping, throwing, climbing, and frequent lifting. The work also requires physical dexterity in the extensive use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs and body in the operation a refuse truck.

May be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Valid driver's license and good driving record. A valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B is required.
