Job Summary:
The Director of Segmentation is responsible for developing and leading Walgreens' enterprise strategy for store and customer level segmentation. This role ensures that each Walgreens store reflects the unique needs of the communities it serves by shaping localized assortment, space allocation, and merchandising strategies built from demographic, geographic, and behavioral insights. This director role is accountable for building and leading a high-performing segmentation team.
This leader partners across Merchandising, Space Planning, Store Operations, Marketing, Data & Analytics, Real Estate, and Finance to translate insights into actionable strategies that enhance relevance, profitability, and customer experience. The role ensures that any added operational complexity driven by localization is balanced with financial return and strategic value.
The vision for this role is for every Walgreens store to authentically represent its surrounding neighborhood, with an in-store experience that feels personalized, community aligned and grounded in data driven insights.
This role is based in our Deerfield, IL office and is on-site four days a week.
Job Responsibilities:
SEGMENTATION STRATEGY & LEADERSHIP
• Leads the development and continuous refinement of Walgreens' segmentation strategy, including customer, store, and community level models.
• Establishes frameworks for determining assortment relevance, localization tiers, and space allocation across categories.
• Uses demographic, cultural, behavioral, and market insights to optimize segmentation and store formats.
LOCALIZED MERCHANDISING & EXPERIENCE
• Partners with Merchandising and Space Planning to design localized assortment strategies that drive both relevance and profitability.
• Guides space allocation decisions to reflect community needs while managing operational complexity.
• Supports creation of neighborhood specific in store experiences, merchandising programs, and formats.
INSIGHTS & ANALYTICS
• Leverages advanced analytics, geospatial data, and modeling to identify community needs and market opportunities.
• Develops KPIs and dashboards to measure segmentation impact across sales, productivity, customer satisfaction, and competitive position.
• Leads continuous testing, learning, and optimization based on performance and community trends.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL LEADERSHIP
• Serves as the enterprise advocate for segmentation and localized strategies.
• Influences senior leaders and builds alignment across Merchandising, Operations, Marketing, Real Estate, and Finance.
• Translates insights into clear recommendations and action plans for business partners.
OPERATIONAL EXECUTION & CHANGE LEADERSHIP
• Drives change management to embed segmentation principles into planning, space, real estate, store operations, marketing, and merchandising processes.
• Creates toolkits, communication plans, and field ready guidance to support execution in stores.
• Ensures pilot design, rollout sequencing, and scaling plans are operationally feasible and financially sound.

External Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 6 years of experience in retail strategy, merchandising, analytics, category management, or related fields; OR High School/GED and at least 9 years of related experience.
  • Experience leading large scale segmentation or localization strategies.
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills, with experience turning insights into business actions.
  • Experience influencing senior leaders and driving cross functional alignment.
  • Experience leading complex programs with measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience leading and developing teams, including people leader roles spanning analysis through senior manager levels.
  • At least 5 years of direct leadership experience.
  • At least 3 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to/at least 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).

Preferred Qualifications
  • MBA or advanced degree in Business, Marketing, Analytics, Economics, or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of geospatial analytics, predictive modeling, or customer insights platforms.
  • Familiarity with retail merchandising systems, planogram tools, and space planning processes.
