What is a WAF?

A WAF (Web Application Firewall) job typically involves protecting web applications from cyber threats by monitoring and filtering HTTP traffic. Professionals in this role configure, manage, and optimize WAF solutions to prevent attacks like SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and DDoS. They analyze security logs, fine-tune firewall rules, and collaborate with IT teams to strengthen application security. Strong knowledge of networking, cybersecurity principles, and WAF technologies is essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Application Firewall (WAF) engineer?

To thrive as a WAF Engineer, you need a solid understanding of web application security, networking protocols, and experience with firewalls, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with WAF solutions such as AWS WAF, F5, Imperva, or Cloudflare, and certifications like CEH or CISSP are often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for identifying threats and collaborating with IT and development teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial to proactively protecting web applications from cyberattacks and ensuring organizational security.

What are the common challenges faced by professionals managing a Web Application Firewall (WAF) and how can they be addressed?

Professionals managing a Web Application Firewall (WAF) often encounter challenges such as keeping up with evolving security threats, ensuring minimal false positives that can disrupt legitimate user activity, and integrating the WAF with existing infrastructure. Regularly updating WAF rules and collaborating closely with development and IT teams can help address new vulnerabilities efficiently. Additionally, continuous monitoring and tuning of WAF policies are crucial for balancing security and usability, making strong communication and analytical skills essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Waf vs Network Security Specialist?

AspectWafNetwork Security Specialist
Primary RoleConfiguring and managing Web Application Firewalls to protect web appsImplementing and maintaining overall network security measures
CertificationsCertified Web Application Defender, CompTIA Security+CISSP, CompTIA Security+
Work EnvironmentPrimarily in IT/security teams focusing on web app securityBroader network infrastructure environments
Industry UsageWeb hosting, e-commerce, online servicesCorporate networks, data centers, enterprise IT

While both roles focus on security, a Waf specializes in protecting web applications through Web Application Firewalls, whereas a Network Security Specialist oversees overall network security infrastructure. The roles often overlap but serve different aspects of cybersecurity.

What does a WAF engineer do?

A WAF (Web Application Firewall) engineer designs, implements, and manages web application security solutions to protect against cyber threats and attacks. They configure and monitor WAF systems, analyze security logs, and update rules to defend web applications from vulnerabilities and malicious traffic.

Job description

Why Sabel Systemsย

Sabel Systems designs and delivers digital engineering ecosystems for DoD programs, enabling teams to connect data, systems, and personnel within secure, scalable environments. Our solutions empower programs to make faster decisions, close sustainment gaps, and meet the digital acquisition requirements.

Rather than simply proposing transformation, we implement and operate it at scale. Our method is clear: we orchestrate existing tools into a governing system of record, ensuring government ownership of infrastructure and traceable decisions. Thereโ€™s no vendor lock, no proprietary baselines, and no need for ATO rebuilds during transitions.

Sabel Systems is redefining modern defense acquisition. If you seek to solve complex challenges at scale and want your work to directly accelerate military capability while reshaping the DoDโ€™s approach to digital engineering, this is the place for you.

Complexity Simplified. Mission Amplified.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain secure cloud infrastructure and platforms for classified DoD systems, incorporating security controls at every layer (network, compute, storage, application)ย
  • Develop and deploy infrastructure-as-code (IaC) using secure, version-controlled approaches (Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible); implement security controls and compliance requirements through codeย
  • Implement and maintain security hardening standards for Kubernetes clusters, Docker containers, Linux/Windows servers, and cloud resources in accordance with DISA STIGs, NIST guidelines, and DoD security baselinesย
  • Manage network security controls including firewalls, WAF (Web Application Firewalls), network segmentation, access controls (ACLs), and encryption for data in transit and at restย
  • Design and implement secrets management solutions (HashiCorp Vault, cloud-native secret managers) to protect credentials, API keys, certificates, and sensitive configuration dataย
  • Design, implement, and maintain secure CI/CD pipelines that enforce security controls throughout the build, test, and deployment processย
  • Implement automated security scanning at multiple pipeline stages: static application security testing (SAST), dynamic application security testing (DAST), interactive application security testing (IAST), container scanning, and infrastructure-as-code scanningย
  • Conduct software composition analysis (SCA) to identify and remediate vulnerable dependencies and track open-source license complianceย
  • Ensure system architecture and configurations comply with DoD security requirements, including DISA Risk Management Framework (RMF), NIST security controls, FISMA requirements, and system security plans (SSPs)ย
  • Implement continuous monitoring and compliance scanning to detect security misconfigurations, unauthorized changes, and control violations in near-real-timeย
  • Configure and manage Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems and security monitoring tools to provide visibility into infrastructure and application security eventsย
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in incident response for infrastructure and application security incidents; investigate security events and coordinate remediation effortsย
  • Provide technical support for application development teams, assisting with deployment issues, troubleshooting, and operational runbooksย
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation including architecture diagrams, runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and security configurationsย
  • Collaborate with security teams, software developers, systems architects, and IT operations to integrate security into development and operations processesย
What You Bringย Required
  • US Citizen with Top Secret security clearance with SCI eligibility; experience in classified environmentsย
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, Information Security, or related field; relevant professional experience may substituteย
  • 10+ years of professional experience in systems administration, infrastructure operations, DevOps, cloud engineering, or cybersecurityย
  • 5+ years of hands-on DevOps or DevSecOps experience including infrastructure automation, CI/CD pipeline development, and cloud platform managementย
  • 5+ years of hands-on cybersecurity experience including security architecture, threat modeling, vulnerability assessment, or security engineeringย
  • Advanced proficiency in Linux administration (Red Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu); strong understanding of Linux security, hardening, and complianceย
  • Advanced expertise with Kubernetes cluster management and security; hands-on experience deploying, securing, and troubleshooting Kubernetes in production environmentsย
  • Proficient with container technologies (Docker, Podman); understanding of container security, image scanning, and supply chain securityย
  • Hands-on expertise with at least one major cloud platform (AWS, Azure, GCP, or DoD-specific clouds); strong understanding of cloud security models, IAM, and complianceย
  • Experience with DoD-specific cloud platforms (AWS GovCloud, Microsoft Azure Government, CloudOne, Platform One) or equivalent compliance-heavy environmentsย
  • Expert-level scripting ability in Python, Bash, Go, or PowerShell; ability to develop complex automation solutions and toolsย
  • Advanced proficiency with infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or Helm; experience implementing IaC security practicesย
  • Expert-level experience with CI/CD platforms (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or equivalent); ability to design and implement secure pipelinesย
  • Hands-on experience with security scanning tools including SAST (SonarQube, Checkmarx), DAST, container scanning, IaC scanning, and SCA toolsย
