What is a VSAT field service technician?

VSAT Field Service Technicians are professionals who install, maintain, and repair Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) satellite communication systems. They work on-site to set up satellite dishes, configure network equipment, and ensure reliable data and voice connectivity. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting issues, performing routine maintenance, and providing customer support for VSAT systems. These technicians may work in remote or challenging locations, often supporting industries like maritime, oil and gas, and remote communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VSAT field service technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VSAT Field Service Technician, you need expertise in satellite communications, RF fundamentals, network troubleshooting, and usually a technical diploma or equivalent experience. Familiarity with satellite modems, spectrum analyzers, and industry certifications like GVF or CompTIA Network+ is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technicians manage complex installations and coordinate with clients. These competencies ensure reliable VSAT system performance, minimize downtime, and support customer satisfaction in remote or challenging environments.

What are some common challenges faced by VSAT field service technicians when working at remote sites?

VSAT Field Service Technicians often encounter challenges such as limited access to replacement parts, unpredictable weather conditions, and connectivity issues in remote locations. Working independently, they must troubleshoot hardware and software problems on-site, sometimes with minimal support. Effective communication with the network operations center and strong problem-solving skills are essential to resolve issues efficiently and maintain system uptime.

Job description

Job Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Field Service Technician to support the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and deployment of connectivity and IT infrastructure at customer and remote job sites.

The ideal candidate will have practical field experience with LTE/5G connectivity, satellite internet, networking equipment, cabling, and onsite technology deployments. This position requires someone who can work independently, troubleshoot issues in the field, and hit the ground running with minimal training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, test, and troubleshoot LTE/5G connectivity equipment, including cellular routers, gateways, modems, hotspots, and cellular failover systems.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot satellite internet equipment, including Starlink, VSAT, or similar systems.
  • Install and configure routers, switches, Wi-Fi access points, and other network equipment.
  • Deploy internet and network connectivity at remote, temporary, construction, and newly established sites.
  • Install, terminate, test, label, and troubleshoot Ethernet, coax, and fiber cabling.
  • Perform cable management, equipment mounting, rack/IDF/MDF installations, and related physical infrastructure work.
  • Troubleshoot connectivity, networking, hardware, and equipment issues onsite.
  • Work with customer personnel and internal teams to identify and resolve field issues.
  • Document installations, configurations, troubleshooting activities, and completed work.
  • Travel regularly to customer and job sites, including remote locations.
  • Safely use hand and power tools and perform physical installation work as required.
  • Work independently while managing multiple field assignments and priorities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, or troubleshooting networking and connectivity equipment.
  • Experience with routers, switches, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and basic networking concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with LTE/5G or cellular networking equipment.
  • Experience with satellite internet systems such as Starlink, VSAT, or similar technology.
  • Experience with Ethernet, coax, and/or fiber cabling.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently in field environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly to job sites.
  • Comfortable performing physical installations and working with hand/power tools.
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience deploying connectivity at remote or temporary sites.
  • Experience with construction-site or industrial field environments.
  • Experience with cellular failover and redundant internet connectivity.
  • Experience with network equipment from Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet, Ubiquiti, or similar vendors.
  • Experience with RF/wireless equipment or site surveys.
  • Previous field service, telecommunications, network deployment, or IT infrastructure experience.

What We're Looking For:

We are looking for a technician with strong hands-on field experience who can hit the ground running. Candidates should be comfortable installing and troubleshooting technology in real-world environments rather than relying primarily on remote or desk-based IT support.
