What is a VP Risk?

A VP Risk, or Vice President of Risk, is a senior executive responsible for overseeing an organization's risk management strategies and policies. They identify, assess, and mitigate risks that could impact the company's financial performance, reputation, or operations. VP Risk professionals often lead teams that analyze market, operational, credit, and regulatory risks, and they work closely with other executives to ensure the company's objectives are achieved within acceptable risk parameters.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VP of Risk, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VP of Risk, you need deep expertise in risk management, financial analysis, regulatory compliance, and a strong educational background—often including an advanced degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with risk assessment tools, enterprise risk management (ERM) systems, and certifications like FRM or CFA are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills help you influence organizational risk culture and drive cross-functional initiatives. These abilities are critical for proactively identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks to ensure organizational stability and regulatory adherence.

What are some of the key challenges a VP of Risk typically faces when aligning risk management strategies with business objectives?

A VP of Risk often faces the challenge of balancing the organization's risk appetite with its growth goals, ensuring that risk mitigation does not stifle innovation or profitability. They must work closely with executive leadership across departments to integrate risk considerations into strategic planning, while also staying ahead of emerging risks such as regulatory changes or cybersecurity threats. Effective communication and collaboration with both technical and non-technical teams are essential to create a risk-aware culture and to ensure that policies are understood and implemented organization-wide.

Job description

Verathon is a global medical device company focused on supporting customers by being their trusted partner, delivering high-quality products that endure over time and ensure clinical and economic utility. Two areas where Verathon has significantly impacted patient care, and become the market leader in each, are bladder volume measurement and airway management. The company’s BladderScan portable ultrasound and GlideScope video laryngoscopy & bronchoscopy systems effectively address unmet needs for healthcare providers and meaningfully raise the standard of care for patients. Verathon, a subsidiary of Roper Technologies, is headquartered in Bothell, Washington, USA and has international subsidiaries in Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific. For more information, please visit www.verathon.com.

Verathon® is looking for a Director, Program Management to lead development execution for the Airway business unit, based in Burnaby, BC.

This role is central to enabling Verathon’s airway growth strategy. The Director will lead execution across a growing portfolio of new products, next-generation platforms, and major product updates, and VAVE initiatives — strengthening governance, tools, and execution discipline to support greater development throughput as the business scales. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this leader partners closely with the VP/GM, Product Marketing, Operations, and QA/RA to ensure programs are delivered on time, on budget, and to specification in a regulated (FDA/ISO 13485) environment.

  • Own end-to-end program execution across the airway portfolio — new products, platform extensions, sustaining programs, and VAVE — driving delivery throughput as program volume and complexity increase.
  • Own program budgets and integrated schedules across the portfolio.
  • Drive on-time, on-budget delivery, ensuring programs meet defined requirements, quality standards, and readiness for design transfer, launch, and initial production.
  • Own the portfolio resource review to align capacity with program commitments.
  • Partner with Engineering and Product Marketing to align program plans with technical execution and product strategy.
  • Establish and maintain clear program plans, milestones, and risk management practices to enable predictable delivery.
  • Define and drive program metrics, ensuring transparency and accountability for performance, status, risks, and trade-offs to support effective decision-making and prioritization.
  • Bring technical and commercial judgment to program reviews — surface issues and dependencies that enable leadership to make timely decisions.
  • Build and scale program management capabilities, establishing governance, tools, and standard work to support a growing portfolio. Lead change management to drive adoption across teams.
  • Lead, coach, and grow a team of 7 program managers. Build bench strength, set performance expectations, and develop the next generation of program leaders.
  • Partner effectively across Engineering, Product Marketing, Operations, and QA/RA — working with peers and senior leaders to maintain alignment throughout development and launch.
  • Coordinate with external development partners to ensure alignment and delivery performance.

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Engineering or a technical discipline preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in hardware product development, including 5+ years in program or project management; experience in medical device or other regulated industries preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience directly leading and developing a team of program or project managers.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex development programs from concept through launch.
  • Strong understanding of product development processes in regulated environments; familiarity with design controls, phase/gate frameworks, and standards such as ISO 13485 preferred.
  • Track record of improving development velocity, schedule predictability, and on-time delivery rates.
  • Passion for driving structured, sustainable process improvement and leading change in how teams work.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams through influence rather than direct authority in a matrixed environment.
  • Ability to manage trade-offs across a portfolio of concurrent programs, balancing speed, quality, cost, and compliance.
  • Experience working with external partners and cross-site teams.
  • PMP or PgMP certification preferred.
  • Willingness to travel, including monthly presence at Verathon headquarters in Bothell, WA.

Salary range - $175,000 – 235,000  (Compensation will vary based on skills, experience and location; it is not typical to be hired at or above the top of the salary range).

Full-time employees who are not on a commission plan are eligible for Verathon’s annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance.

Verathon provides a competitive benefits package including a generous HCSA, paid holidays, paid time off and a retirement matching plan.
