Job description

Description:

At Maps Credit Union, payments are more than transactions - they're moments of trust. From everyday card purchases to transfers that help businesses thrive, our payment systems power how members live, work, and move money with confidence. We're seeking a VP of Payments to architect the next generation of Maps' payments infrastructure and lead the way. Someone who sees modernization not as a project list, but as a competitive advantage.

In this leadership role, the VP of Payments will shape and execute Mapsโ€™ payments modernization strategy, overseeing the systems, vendors, and teams that support ACH, cards, instant payments, and digital wallet integrations. This position blends operational excellence with innovation by setting performance standards, strengthening reliability and scalability, and advancing new payment capabilities as member and business needs grow. If you are ready to make a meaningful impact, this is your opportunity to lead the future of payments at a trusted credit union that delivers value every day.

The VP of Payments is responsible for:

Operations & Team Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for the Payments department, ensuring reliable processing of ACH transactions, card servicing activities, and wire transfers.
  • Maintain strong operational standards focused on accuracy, consistency, and dependable service for members and businesses.
  • Support and guide the operational team responsible for day-to-day payment processing and resolve issues that could affect payment reliability.
  • Lead and develop the Payments department, setting KPIs and clear expectations for service quality and operational performance.
  • Encourage a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Strategy

  • Identify opportunities to expand Mapsโ€™ payment capabilities in ways that support member needs and business growth.
  • Evaluate and prioritize emerging payment technologies and networks -- including instant payment rails such as FedNow, RTP, and Zelle, digital card issuance, and wallet provisioning -- to determine adoption timing and implementation approach. Work with Product, Consumer Lending, Commercial, and Digital teams to ensure payment capabilities support broader organizational strategic priorities.
  • Lead payments conversion planning and execution in support of merger and acquisition activity, ensuring acquired institutions are integrated onto Maps' payment infrastructure with minimal operational disruption.
  • Prepare the department to support growing payment volumes and evolving payment services.

Collaboration & Implementation

  • Work with teams across the organization to introduce new payment features such as faster payment options, card capabilities, and business payment services.
  • Support the implementation of treasury management services alongside Commercial, Digital, and Product teams.
  • Collaborate with the Automation team to simplify payment workflows and reduce operational complexity.
  • Support efforts to automate manual steps, improve straight-through processing, and reduce operational risk as payment volumes grow.
  • Work with Data, Automation, and Digital teams to improve visibility into payment performance and operational metrics.

Infrastructure & Vendor Oversight

  • Oversee relationships with payment processors, networks, and service providers that support Mapsโ€™ payment infrastructure.
  • Monitor vendor performance and system reliability to ensure payment processing platforms remain stable and well supported.
  • Coordinate upgrades and enhancements to payment systems and related technology platforms.
  • Continually improve professional and technical knowledge by attending conferences and online training, following industry trends, and maintaining professional relationships.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Follow regulatory and policy compliance requirements, which include those efforts in compliance with Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Regulations, Identity Theft Red Flags, and other compliance-related policies.
  • Work closely with Digital, Commercial, Consumer Lending, Product, Automation, Risk, and Compliance teams to ensure payment services align with organizational priorities while maintaining strong operational controls.
  • Ensure new payment services are introduced responsibly, meet service and regulatory requirements, and that payment network standards remain strong as the Credit Union grows.
  • Contribute to planning efforts related to payments modernization and operational improvements.
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • A high level of knowledge and understanding of the payments industry including systems, government regulations, laws, industry standards and best practices relating to payments, payment fraud, and member communications.
  • Strong understanding of payments operations including ACH, card servicing, wires, and payment networks.
  • Ability to improve operational processes while maintaining strong controls and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to strategically align innovative payments solutions with larger organizational objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and financial industry-specific training.
  • Ten or more years of experience in payments operations, treasury services, card services, or related financial services roles.
  • Five or more years of leadership experience overseeing operational teams.
  • Experience working with payment processors, ACH environments, card servicing operations, or money movement systems.
  • Must be bondable, which includes the ability to meet the credit reporting standards set by Maps Credit Union and pass a pre-employment background check.

Exempt starting salary range: $135,000 - $150,000 per year, depending on experience.
