Position Overview
Power your future with Qualus as a Panel Shop Lead. The Panel Shop Lead is a hands-on working lead responsible for coordinating daily panel shop activities and ensuring relay and control panels are built safely, on schedule, and to engineered drawings and quality standards. This role supports build planning and labor balancing, provides technical guidance and training to panel shop wiremen/assemblers, and partners with engineering and project teams to resolve drawing questions, manage changes/redlines, and complete inspections and testing for electrical substation control panels, including AC/DC cabinets, bus, breakers, and associated equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Lead daily assembly, wiring, and inspection activities for relay and control panels for the electric utility industry; ensure workmanship meets company and customer standards
  • Read and interpret specifications, layouts, wiring diagrams, and schematics; clarify questions with engineering and document approved changes/redlines
  • Perform and document in-process and final inspections on electrical frames and panels; verify labeling, torque requirements (where applicable), and overall workmanship
  • Perform point-to-point/continuity checks per wiring diagrams and schematics; ensure results are recorded and support other team members with troubleshooting
  • Verify DC (and applicable AC) schematics including power and control circuits; identify discrepancies, coordinate corrections, and prevent repeat defects
  • Assign and coordinate daily work activities; balance labor across projects to meet production schedules and communicate status/escalations to management
  • Train, mentor, and onboard panel shop personnel; reinforce standard work, safe tool use, and quality expectations
  • Promote and enforce safe work practices and stop work and correct unsafe conditions when identified
  • Coordinate materials, hardware, and panel components; identify shortages early and work with supply chain/project teams to prevent schedule delays
  • Drive continuous improvement in the panel shop (5S, standard work, error-proofing); share lessons learned and implement corrective actions for repeat issues
  • Perform other related duties as assigned; support special projects and cross-functional initiatives as needed

Qualifications
  • Proven ability to lead, train, and coach panel shop wiremen/assemblers; assign work and provide clear daily direction
  • Strong attention to detail and ownership for workmanship; able to identify defects, stop work when needed, and drive correction/containment
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment used for panel fabrication; able to teach safe use to others
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics; troubleshoot and support others through complex builds
  • Working knowledge of shop safety practices (PPE, LOTO as applicable, tool safety) and ability to enforce safe work expectations
  • Ability to plan work, prioritize multiple jobs, and meet production schedules; escalate constraints and material issues early
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with engineering, project management, and field teams; provide status updates and resolve build questions
