What are some of the common challenges faced by Voxel artists when collaborating with game developers or animators?

Voxel artists often work closely with game developers and animators to ensure that their 3D pixel-based art integrates seamlessly into a project. A common challenge is balancing artistic vision with technical constraints such as polygon limits, texture sizes, and performance optimization. Communication is key, as Voxel artists must translate feedback from developers into efficient design adjustments while maintaining the intended aesthetic. Adapting to different workflows and software tools is also essential, as teams may use various platforms for modeling, rigging, and animation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Voxel Artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Voxel Artist, you need strong skills in 3D modeling, digital art, and a solid understanding of color theory and design principles, often supported by a relevant art or design degree. Familiarity with voxel art software such as MagicaVoxel, Blender, or Unity, and knowledge of game engines are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help an artist collaborate with teams and deliver visually appealing assets. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality voxel art that enhances user experiences in games and digital media.

What are voxels and what do they do in computer graphics?

A voxel, short for 'volume pixel,' is a unit of graphic information that represents a value in three-dimensional space, similar to how a pixel represents data in two dimensions. Voxels are commonly used in 3D modeling, medical imaging, and game development to create detailed volumetric representations of objects or environments. Unlike traditional 3D models built from polygons, voxel-based models are made up of tiny cubes, which allows for complex structures and easy manipulation of volume data. This makes voxels particularly useful for applications that require accurate representation of internal structures, such as CT scans or destructible environments in video games.

What is the difference between Voxel vs 3D Modeler?

AspectVoxel3D Modeler

Industry UsageUsed in game design, virtual worlds, and 3D visualizationUsed in animation, game development, film
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

Both Voxel and 3D Modeler roles involve creating digital 3D assets, but Voxel focuses on volumetric pixel-based models often used in gaming and virtual environments, while 3D Modelers create surface-based models for animation, film, and detailed visualizations. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

Job Summary:
Voxel is a company focused on perception systems that enhance operations in various industries. They are seeking a Tech Lead Manager to oversee applied machine learning work, set technical direction, and lead a team of engineers to develop capabilities that drive their platform's success.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Set technical direction for Voxel's vision and ML capabilities: what we build, how we build it, how we know it works.
โ€ข Hire and lead a small team of applied ML engineers. Set the bar, set the goals, set the culture.
โ€ข Stay in the code. Architecture decisions, model reviews, the occasional 2am debugging session.
โ€ข Make hard calls on tradeoffs: classical CV vs. end-to-end models, on-device vs. cloud, accuracy vs. latency vs. cost.
โ€ข Work directly with product, sales and customers. The loop from customer problem to shipped model runs through you.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข 5+ years building applied ML systems that actually shipped: production code, real users, consequences when it broke.
โ€ข Track record of owning something end to end: from messy data and ambiguous specs to a model running in production.
โ€ข Strong Python. Comfortable across the stack: training pipelines, eval, deployment, inference at scale.
โ€ข Fluent with modern vision and multimodal methods (detection, segmentation, tracking, VLMs) and opinionated about when to reach for which.
โ€ข Bias toward shipping. You'd rather ship something good this week than something perfect next quarter.
โ€ข Comfortable with ambiguity, messy data, and customers who don't know what they want until they see it.
โ€ข Some experience leading technical work: a project, a small team, a junior engineer you mentored. Doesn't have to be a formal management title.
Preferred:
โ€ข Production experience with video understanding, temporal reasoning, or activity recognition.
โ€ข Worked in a domain where failure has real cost (e.g. robotics, AVs, industrial, medical).
โ€ข Built fast iteration loops: eval-in-the-loop, continuous improvement, deployment across many sites.
Company:
Voxel enhances workplace safety and operational efficiency by transforming existing security cameras into intelligent monitoring systems. Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in San Francisco, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
