JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Position Summary

Hospital Volunteers provide valuable non-clinical support to patients, visitors, and hospital staff. They help create a welcoming, compassionate environment by assisting with a variety of tasks that enhance patient comfort and satisfaction while supporting the efficient operation of the hospital.


Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patients, visitors, and families with directions and general information
  • Provide companionship and emotional support to patients as appropriate
  • Deliver items such as flowers, mail, or comfort supplies
  • Assist with clerical and administrative tasks (e.g., filing, assembling packets, answering phones)
  • Support hospital departments and staff with non-medical duties
  • Escort patients or visitors when needed (wheelchair assistance, wayfinding)
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to hospital policies, safety procedures, and HIPAA requirements
  • Represent the hospital professionally and courteously at all times

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum age requirement: 18
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations with empathy and respect
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Dependable, punctual, and professional demeanor
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and perform light lifting if required
  • Completion of hospital onboarding requirements (application, interview, background check, health screenings, and training)

Preferred Skills

  • Customer service or prior volunteer experience
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills (a plus)
  • Interest in healthcare or community service

Commitment

Volunteers are typically asked to commit to a regular schedule (e.g., one shift per week for a minimum for a minimum of 4 hours), depending on volunteer availability and organizational needs.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 20 pounds is required.

Constant (67%-100%) -hearing, seeing
Frequently (34%-66%) - pushing/pulling, climbing, handling/feeling, talking
Occasionally (1%-33%) - lifting, carrying, stooping, crouching, reaching
