JoyRx Music Specialist (Part Time 20-25 hours per week)

Their goal was to create something extraordinary: an organization with a new vision for what pediatric cancer support services look like. Today, the JoyRx Mentorship, Nature, and Music programs reach thousands of hospitalized children of all ages and diagnoses. Who You Are:
You are a multi-talented musician capable of engaging children and teens, along with their family members and hospital staff, through tailored musical experiences, which may include: performing song requests, music instruction, facilitating concerts and group activities, instrument check-out, and music exploration.
You are passionate about serving seriously ill children, teens, and their families and are comfortable working in hospital and clinic settings within the scope of practice of arts in health. You can play a wide variety of genres and have a current knowledge of popular music for kids and teens.
You are adaptable and can "read a room" to match the music interaction with the situation. You are a strong communicator able to interact with kids, hospital staff, family members, volunteers, and other CCA team members.
Position Summary:
This role delivers interactive music experiences for hospitalized children and teens in local partner healthcare sites by combining musical performance, child engagement, and collaboration to bring moments of joy, creativity, and connection to families facing serious illness.
The JoyRx Music Specialist position reports to the Program Manager.
Essential Functions:
Music Services:
• Encourage kids and teens to engage with the music experience that feels right to them in a one-to-one interaction, e.g. playing, singing, exploring, learning, and connecting with others through recreational music, informal song writing, impromptu lessons, and music technology
• Provide basic recreational music lessons and suggest instruments for check-out
Facilitate structured and improvised musical group experiences, such as live concerts and musical activities to multiple patients at one time
• Participate in and perform for occasional hospital concerts and at other CCA-hosted events
Administrative and Additional Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with pediatric healthcare professionals to customize JoyRx Music experience for kids, teens, and families
• Maintain instruments and equipment stored at the hospital in the JoyRx Music cart, including sanitizing all items per hospital infection control guidelines, tuning and stringing instruments, as well as basic repair and upkeep of music cart and supplies
• Assist with music volunteer interviews, set up, tracking, and appreciation
• Support JoyRx Music scheduling, reporting, and performance tracking
• Collect anecdotes and media for families to help share their JoyRx Music experience through photo, video, or narrative via CCA's social media channels and events
Support guest tours highlighting JoyRx Music services in the hospital setting and public relations activities
Provide appropriate program administrative and data support as needed
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
• A musician and vocalist who is proficient playing string and/or other instruments (guitar, ukulele, and keyboard are primarily used in this role) in a wide variety of different genres
• Familiarity with music-based technology applications (e.g. iPads and web/app-based music programs)
• Ability to work in an environment with children, teens, and family members who are under stress, in pain, or undergoing medical procedures, and deliver therapeutic music services within scope of practice that support the child, family, and the hospital staff as appropriate to the situation
• Preference for bilingual language skills, particularly Spanish
• Knowledgeable of current and popular music for kids and teens with the ability to improvise in the moment
• Observant/sensitive and able to respond quickly and appropriately to events and people
• A direct communicator with strong social and communication skills
• Ability to foster a culture of positive impact; be personable, self-confident, optimistic, and enthusiastic
• Ability to maintain and model strong boundaries and professional maturity
• Strong time management skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
• Able to work rotating days and hours within a team, sometimes outside of traditional business hours
Education and Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree or comparable professional experience in related field such as arts in health, therapeutic music, music education, music performance, counseling, and/or social work
• 2+ years of relevant professional experience working with kids and families
• 2+ years of professional music experience, either performing or teaching music
• Experience working in a medical setting and/or some medical knowledge preferred

This position is based in Portland, Oregon. CCA offers a hybrid work environment, with both onsite days (pediatric hospitals and healthcare facilities Monday through Thursday) and the ability to work remotely on Fridays. Hours for this position will include evening and/or weekend hours. This position primarily operates in patient hospital rooms, clinics, activity rooms, and other common areas. This position interacts with patients, family members, staff, etc., under all conditions and circumstances. This role is occasionally in contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
This position requires frequent walking, standing, and lifting, as well as physical demands of singing, performing, playing and carrying instruments and supplies (up to 25 pounds) as well as frequently pushing/pulling of up to 100 pounds. This position requires the ability to speak, hear, write, and read English and consists of operation of a tablet, computer, and other electronic equipment.
Travel:
This position may require occasional travel in the Portland Metro area.

This position offers a competitive salary range starting at $24/hr Final offer amounts and levels are determined by multiple factors, including your experience, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part-time (20-25 hours/week) non-exempt position. Some flexibility in hours is allowed; days and hours of work range from Monday through Thursday, 9:00 am - 9:00 pm depending on the specific hospital units served and Friday 9:00 am - 12:00 pm from home. This position may require evening hours a minimum of one night per week and there is the possibility of occasional weekend work.
