Job description

Description
St. Anne Catholic Church in Bristol, Virginia, seeks a Director of Music and Coordinator of Liturgy to lead the sacred music of a parish and school community in the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Serving on the senior staff and working in close collaboration with the pastor, the director plans and carries out a comprehensive music program rooted in the Church's tradition of sacred music: directing the parish choir at Sunday Mass, forming cantors and instrumentalists, leading the student choir at the weekly school Mass, preparing music for weddings and funerals, and helping to shape the great liturgies of the year from Christmas through the Sacred Paschal Triduum. The position is full-time (35 hours per week) with diocesan salary and benefits, and it suits a musician who loves the liturgy, works generously with volunteers of every age, and wants a life's craft placed at the service of the worship of God. Requirements
  • Proficiency in keyboard accompaniment (piano and organ) sufficient to personally accompany Sunday Masses, the weekly school Mass, and choral rehearsals
  • Demonstrated skill in choral direction and vocal coaching, including the ability to recruit, train, and retain volunteer singers of all ages
  • Experience planning liturgical music across the full liturgical year
  • Ability to sight-read, transpose, and prepare repertoire from the parish's licensed resources
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills: scheduling volunteers, meeting with wedding couples and bereaved families, managing a departmental budget, and collaborating with parish and school staff
  • Comfort with basic technology for the role, including livestream operation and standard office software

Preferred
  • Roman Catholic in Good Standing
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in sacred music, music, organ performance, or a related field
  • Three or more years of parish music leadership or comparable liturgical music experience
  • Familiarity with the documents governing sacred music (Sacrosanctum Concilium, Musicam Sacram, Sing to the Lord) and with the Diocese of Richmond's liturgical guidelines
  • Experience working with children's choirs in a school setting
  • Cantor formation experience and comfort singing psalmody when needed
  • Conversational Spanish or willingness to support bilingual liturgies
