Volunteer Medical Coding Training information

What is volunteer medical coding training?

Volunteer Medical Coding Training is a program or opportunity where individuals can learn and practice medical coding skills, often in a healthcare or non-profit setting, without financial compensation. These training programs are designed to help aspiring medical coders gain hands-on experience, understand healthcare documentation, and become familiar with coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS. Volunteering for medical coding allows participants to build a resume, network with professionals, and potentially qualify for paid positions in the future. Training may be offered by hospitals, clinics, or organizations that support healthcare administration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in volunteer medical coding training?

To excel in Volunteer Medical Coding Training, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding guidelines, often supported by a background in healthcare or completion of relevant coursework. Familiarity with coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, as well as use of electronic health record (EHR) software, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate coding, regulatory compliance, and support efficient healthcare operations.

What can I expect in terms of mentorship and feedback during a volunteer medical coding training program?

During a Volunteer Medical Coding Training program, you can typically expect to work closely with experienced medical coders or trainers who act as mentors. They often provide regular feedback on your coding accuracy and help you understand complex documentation. Most programs encourage open communication and may include structured review sessions or one-on-one guidance, which are invaluable for learning industry standards and best practices. This supportive environment helps you build confidence and competence, making the transition to a paid medical coding role smoother.

Job description

A Hospital system in Los Angeles is looking for an experienced Revenue Cycle Coding Manager. The Revenue Cycle Coding Manager will lead coding and charge capture performance, guide operational oversight, and partner with clinical and compliance stakeholders to strengthen accuracy, productivity, and reimbursement outcomes. The ideal Revenue Cycle Coding Manager candidate must bring deep knowledge of revenue cycle operations, medical coding standards, and team leadership within a fast-paced healthcare environment. This is a hybrid remote role Monday - Friday with equipment provided.

Responsibilities:

• Direct daily coding operations by assigning work, reviewing team output, and ensuring tasks are completed accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with established procedures.

• Analyze weekly and monthly performance results using key operational and quality indicators, then present trends and improvement opportunities to senior leadership.

• Supervise coding work queues and charge capture activity to confirm diagnosis, procedure, and billing details are properly documented and coded.

• Ensure urgent coding requests are prioritized and completed within required turnaround expectations.

• Partner with physicians, surgeons, and clinical leadership to address coding questions, resolve workflow issues, and escalate concerns when broader intervention is needed.

• Coordinate with compliance and coding leadership to support audits, communicate findings, implement corrective actions, and reinforce timely staff education.

• Lead team meetings, provide coaching on complex coding scenarios, and promote consistent adherence to departmental policies and quality standards.

• Oversee updates to charge documents, procedure listings, and code requests while supporting coding system conversions and related operational changes when required.

• Monitor regulatory updates, payer guidance, and industry developments, and communicate relevant coding changes to internal stakeholders.

• Conduct quality reviews, operational studies, and other assigned analyses to improve coding accuracy, team performance, and revenue cycle effectiveness.

• 5+ years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle, medical coding, or revenue cycle management, including leadership responsibility.
• Strong knowledge of medical coding methodologies, including CPT, HCPCS, fee-for-service, outpatient, inpatient, hospital, and physician coding.
• Experience with charge capture, medical claims, medical billing, and end-to-end revenue cycle processes in a healthcare setting.
• Familiarity with compliance expectations, coding audits, quality review practices, and corrective action follow-through.
• Ability to interpret payer requirements, including Medi-Cal guidelines, and apply current reimbursement rules accurately.
• Proven ability to manage staff productivity, monitor quality metrics, and deliver coaching or training to coding teams.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with providers, clinical leaders, compliance partners, and senior management.
