What is a volunteer law student?

Volunteer law students are individuals currently enrolled in law school who provide their time and legal skills without pay to gain practical experience and contribute to legal organizations, nonprofits, or government agencies. They often assist with legal research, drafting documents, client intake, and supporting attorneys in case preparation. This experience helps them develop essential legal skills, build professional networks, and fulfill pro bono or internship requirements for their degree.

What does a volunteer law student do?

Volunteer Law Students often support attorneys and legal staff with tasks such as legal research, drafting memoranda, organizing case files, and assisting with client intake. Depending on the organization's focus, they may also observe court proceedings, help prepare trial materials, or participate in community outreach. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to real-world legal work, enhances research and communication skills, and allows students to contribute meaningfully to the team while learning from seasoned professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer law student?
