Metro Volunteers serve in an unpaid, at-will capacity for this Department; however, they will receive mileage reimbursement for mileage incurred traveling to and from area assignments.
Metro Volunteers do not have police power. They volunteer in different bureaus of the Department to perform, on a part-time basis, non-confrontational support services. Metro Volunteers staff visitor counters and information booths; answer general phone and in-person inquiries; assist in crowd control; help officers to set up and maintain the perimeters of auto accident scenes; conduct handicap parking enforcement; interact with visitors and residents as goodwill ambassadors; and deliver safety guidance in public schools.
Metro Volunteers are able to determine their work schedules and the areas of the Department they are interested in working. All Volunteers will be required to work at least eight (8) hours per month.
Minimum Qualifications/Position-Specific Conditions
Training, Education and Experience
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident without conditions on status.
  • Have access to transportation to commute between home and volunteer assignment.

Best Candidates Will Have
  • An interest and desire to assist the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in the furtherance of it's vision, mission, goals and values.
  • Skill in using desktop or laptop computers, including a keyboard and mouse (or equivalent pointer device).

Conditions of Volunteering
In addition to the General Conditions of Employment, found here, the following specific conditions of employment and physical conditions apply to this position.
  • Personal Appearance: While on duty, and/or representing the Department, uniformed or otherwise, all Department employees will be neat and clean in their appearance in public. Employees are prohibited from attaching, affixing, or displaying objects, articles or jewelry on or through the nose, tongue, eyebrow or other exposed body part, except the ears for females, while on duty. Employees are prohibited from stretching or "gauging" their earlobes. All jewelry implants will not be exposed or visible while on duty. Tattoos or branding will not be exposed or visible while on duty and/or representing the Department. Such markings must be covered by clothing. Markings that cannot be covered by clothing will be covered using neutral-toned bandages or patchesexcept for hands, neck, head, or face tattoos. Makeup is not permissible to cover a tattoo. Tattoos or branding anywhere on the body that promote racism/discrimination, indecency, extremist or supremacist philosophies, lawlessness, violence, or contain sexually explicit material are prohibited.
  • Maintain access to transportation to commute to and from volunteer assignment.
  • Maintain sufficient verbal and written proficiency in the English language to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must not carry weapons when volunteering.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age to be eligible for assignment to the Handicap Parking Enforcement Program.
  • Work on weekends, holidays, and/or evening hours, if performing support services for special units or at public events.
  • Work a minimum of 8 hours per month.
  • Wear a uniform and carry equipment, when necessary.
  • Participate in the LVMPD Mental Wellness Program.
  • Speech sufficient to effectively communicate with other persons encountered in the course of work.
  • Hearing sufficient to hear instructions or engage in conversation over the phone or in person.
  • Agility and mobility sufficient to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, rotate and extend neck, and balance self while performing work indoor or outdoor.
  • Strength and mobility sufficient to lift light items with or without aid of equipment.
  • Endurance sufficient to sit or stand for long periods of time, as necessary.

Those candidates who are successful in the selection process and become Metro Volunteers will be given training both in general LVMPD operations, as well as in area- or program-specific details.
