About the Role:

Planet's Electrical Engineering team is looking for a Mechanical Engineer, Harness Design to support the end-to-end design and delivery of our satellite's critical wire harnesses. You will contribute to the entire process, from creating 3D routing models and 2D fabrication drawings, to supporting component selection to meet strict performance and environmental requirements for the vacuum and vibration of space. This is a hands-on, collaborative role where you will work with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure your designs are successfully built, integrated, and ready for launch.

This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from our San Francisco office 3 days per week.

Impact You'll Own:

  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers to develop system integration plans, ensure electrical integrity, and streamline the transition from design to manufacturing.
  • Support the component selection process for connectors, terminals, wire, and protection (sleeving, conduit) to meet all system performance, environmental, and cost requirements.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance all critical design documentation, including electrical schematics, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and engineering change orders (ECOs) to ensure product accuracy.
  • Support manufacturing and integration teams by troubleshooting build challenges, resolving design issues, and ensuring all assemblies meet quality and compliance standards.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar technical field.
  • 2+ years of experience in developing electrical wire harnesses, routing in complex assemblies, and creating 2D/3D CAD documentation.
  • Proficiency in CAD software for harness design and routing (e.g. SolidWorks Electrical, CATIA, Capital Harness, etc).
  • Proficiency in reading and creating electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Solid understanding of version control for design files and managing documentation releases to production.
  • Familiarity with IPC/NASA/etc harness design standards.

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Knowledge of industry standards for cable and harness assembly.
  • Hands-on experience with harness fabrication, including crimping, soldering, and building prototypes.
  • Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.
