What is a volunteer full stack developer?

A Volunteer Full Stack Developer is an unpaid role where a developer contributes to projects by working on both front-end and back-end development tasks. They typically use a variety of programming languages and frameworks to build, improve, or maintain websites and applications. These positions are often found in non-profits, startups, or open-source communities, providing valuable experience while supporting a meaningful cause. Volunteers may collaborate with teams or work independently, depending on the project's needs. This role offers a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, expand technical skills, and build a professional network.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer full stack developer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Full Stack Developer, you need strong programming skills in both front-end (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and back-end (e.g., Node.js, Python, or PHP) technologies, often supported by a degree or self-taught experience in software development. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud services, databases, and possibly certifications in web development tools is typical. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork are essential soft skills, especially when collaborating with diverse, often remote, teams. These abilities enable volunteers to effectively contribute to projects, deliver functional solutions, and support organizational goals despite the challenges of volunteer-based work.

What types of projects do volunteer full stack developers typically work on, and how is their work structured?

Volunteer Full Stack Developers often contribute to a wide range of projects, such as building or maintaining websites for nonprofits, developing internal tools to support community initiatives, or supporting open-source platforms. Their work is usually project-based and may involve collaboration with designers, project managers, and other developers, sometimes in a fully remote environment. Volunteers often have flexible schedules, allowing them to contribute as their availability permits, but they are still expected to communicate progress and meet key milestones. This structure provides valuable experience while making a tangible impact on the organization’s mission.

Your opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us challenge the status quo and transform the finance industry together. We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).

Schwab Technology Services enables the future of how clients manage their money by delivering innovative and reliable technology solutions that help democratize access to investing and financial planning. In this role, you will contribute to the development of enterprise-scale applications that facilitate secure and efficient asset movement across advisor client accounts. Working within a collaborative Agile environment, you will partner with engineers, product teams, and business stakeholders to deliver technology solutions that improve client experiences and drive operational efficiency. You will have opportunities to build full-stack software solutions, solve complex technical challenges, strengthen application performance and security, and contribute to the delivery of modern cloud-enabled platforms.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for an early-career software engineer to expand technical expertise across front-end and back-end development, API services, cloud-based architectures, and DevOps practices while helping to deliver meaningful business outcomes for financial advisors and their clients.

What you have

Required Qualifications

  • 1+ years of software development experience, internship experience, or equivalent hands-on experience developing enterprise or web-based applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience developing web applications using modern front-end technologies, including Angular and/or AngularJS, HTML5, CSS/SCSS, JavaScript, and responsive web development concepts.
  • Experience developing back-end solutions using C#, ASP.NET, MVC frameworks, and RESTful and/or SOAP APIs.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as SQL Server or Oracle.
  • Foundational knowledge of document-based databases such as MongoDB or other NoSQL technologies.
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) practices, including application design, development, testing, deployment, and support.
  • Knowledge of web application architecture, event-driven applications, session management, application security, debugging techniques, and performance optimization.
  • Understanding of CI/CD concepts, automated testing practices, and source control management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage priorities, adapt to changing business needs, and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience developing enterprise software applications.
  • Experience working with microservices architectures and cloud-native application development.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Pivotal Cloud Foundry or private cloud environments.
  • Exposure to Agile development methodologies, Scrum practices, and collaborative engineering teams.
  • Experience building scalable, secure, and resilient applications in regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with automated testing frameworks and quality engineering practices.
  • Ability to analyze data patterns, identify process improvements, and contribute innovative ideas.
  • Knowledge of financial services, wealth management, advisor platforms, or money movement solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence team outcomes through collaboration, adaptability, and continuous learning.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without employer sponsorship.

In addition to the salary range, this role is eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
